  • I give 5s to the poorest and neediest people of Shiplake.
  • I give £10 each to my children:
    • My three sons Izake, Mathewe and Abraham Wilder, to be paid at age 21.
    • My two daughters Elizabeth and Marie Wilder, to be paid at age 21 or earlier marriage.
    • The child with which my wife is now pregnant, to be paid at age 21 or (if a girl) earlier marriage.
    If any of my children die before inheriting, their portions go equally between the survivors.
  • I give £10 to my brother Richard Wilder, to be paid within two years after my decease.
  • I give £3 to my sisters Alice Wilder and Elizabeth Wilder, to be paid within three years after my decease.
  • I give all my lands and tenements etc in Shiplake, part bought from Thomas Bearse and the rest from Thomas Bryan, gent deceased, to my loving wife Martha and her heirs etc forever, to be held from the chief Lord of the Fee by the accustomed rents and service.
    But she is to sell [all of it], or enough of it to pay my debts and the above legacies.
  • My debts, legacies and funeral charges being first paid, I give all the rest of my goods, cattle, chattels and household stuff to my wife Martha whom I make sole Executrix.
  • I appoint my loving friends William Bird and John Abeare of Henley, yeomen, to be my overseers, and I give them 3s 4d each for their pains.

In the name of God Amen: the Nineteenth Day of January Anno D[omi]ni 1618 And in the Sixteenth
yere of the Raigne of our Sov[er]aigne Lord James by the grace of god King of England Fraunce & Ireland
defender of the faith &c And in the Two & Fiftith yere of his Raigne of Scotland I Thomas Wilder of
Shiplake in the Countie of Oxon yeoman. being sicke in bodie but of good & p[er]fect memorie all thanck[es] therfore
I render unto almightie god, calling to my remembrance that all flesh is mortall & naturallie borne to die
& Depart out of this transitory life the time & place therof being uncertaine, Have therfore thought good
to ordaine & make this my last Will & Testament in manner & forme following (That is to saie) First
I bequeath my soule into the hand[es] of almightie god my maker, & of Jhesus Christ my Redeemer & of the
holie Ghost my comforter, trusting assuredly to be saved by the onlie merritt[es] of Christ his passion sufficient
for me & all mankinde, And my bodie to be buried in the Christian buriall where it shall seeme most meete to
my Executrix hereafter named . It[e]m I give & bequeath unto the most poore & needie people of Shiplake
aforesaid the full some of Five shilling[es] of lawfull mony of England . It[e]m I give & bequeath unto my
Three sonnes viz't Izake, Mathewe, & Abraham Wilder, the full some of Tenn pound[es] apeece of lawfull mony
of England, to be paid unto them & ev[er]y of them as they shall sev[er]allie accomplish the full age of One and
Twentie yeres It[e]m I give & bequeath unto my two Daughters viz't Elizabeth & Marie Wilder the full
some of Tenn pound[es] apeece of lawfull mony of England to be paid unto them & either of them as they
shall sev[er]ally accomplish the full age of One & Twentie yeres, or at their sev[er]all Daies of marriage w[hi]chsoever
of them shall first come or happen It[e]m I give & bequeath unto the child wherw[i]th my wife nowe goeth
& is conceived of the full some of Tenn pound[es] of lawfull mony of England to be paid at thage of One
& Twentie yeres or Day of marriage as aforesaid provided alwaies that if it shall happen any of the my
said Children to Depart out of this transitorie life, before the accomplishment of the full age of One and
Twentie yeres or Daies of marriage Then my will intent & meaninge is, that the porc[i]on or porc[i]ons
of him her or them so Dyeing shalbe equallie Devided & paid to & amongest the survivo[r] or survivo[rs] of them
It[e]m I give & bequeath to Richard Wilder my brother the full some of Tenn pound[es] of lawfull mony
of England to be paid unto him w[i]thin Two Yeres after my decease It[e]m I give & bequeath unto Alice
Wilder & Elizabeth Wilder my sisters the full some of Three pound[es] of good & lawfull mony of England
apeece, to be paid unto them & either of them w[i]thin Three Yeres after my Decease It[e]m I give and
bequeath unto Martha my loveing Wife, and to her heires & assignes forev[er] All & singuler my Land[es] Te[neme]nt[es]
& heredittam[en]t[es] w[i]th their and ev[er]y of their appurten[an]c[es] Scituate lyeing & being in the parrish of Shiplake
aforesaid in the said County of Oxon, part wherof I purchased of Thomas Bearse, and the residue therof
I purchased of Thomas Bryan gent deceased. To have and to hold all the said Land[es] Te[neme]nt[es] and
heredittam[en]t[es] w[i]th all & singuler their & ev[er]y of their appurten[an]c[es] & ev[er]y p[ar]te & p[ar]cell therof unto the said
Martha my wife her heires & assignes forev[er] To the onlie prop[er] use & behoofe of the said Martha & of
her heires & assignes forev[er], To be holden of the cheife Lord or Lord[es] of the fee or fees therof by the Rentt[es]
& s[er]vice therfore Due & of right accustomed. Nevertheles upon this Condic[i]on (and it is my will
intent & true meaninge) that she the said Martha shall in convenient time bargaine & sell all the said
Land[es] Te[neme]nt[es] & heredittament[es] w[i]th all & singuler their appurten[an]c[es], or so much of the same as shall fully
satisfie & paie all such Debts as I Doe owe, & all such legasies as I have by this my Last Will and
Testament given & bequeathed to any p[er]son or p[er]sons whatsoev[er] All the residue of my good[es] Cattells
Chattell[es] & houshold stuffe herein before not given nor bequeathed (my Debt[es] & legasies being trulie
paid, & my funerall charges Disbursed) I Doe give & bequeath unto the said Martha my Wife, whom I
Doe ordaine & make sole Executrix of this my last will & Testament, And I Doe nomynate and
appoint my loveing frind[es] William Bird and John Abeare of Henley upon Thames in the Countie of
Oxon yeomen to be Ov[er]seers of this my last will and Testament And I give unto either of them for
their paines to be taken herein Three shilling[es] and Fower pence apeece. In wittnes wherof I the said
Thomas Wilder have hereunto sett my hand and seale the Daie & yere first above wrytten:/
