  • My body is to be buried in the churchyard of Wantage.
  • I give the mother church of Sarum 2d.
  • I give Frydeswide my wife as much household stuff as was hers at our marriage.
  • I give her my best featherbed, best coverlet, best blankets,best sheets and all other things of the best suitable for [the bed]
  • I give her my best (grey) horse, my best cow at her choice, ten sheep, half my corn in both houses and heyses, half my swine both dead and alive, and one third of my poultry.
  • My wife shall take the profits of half my houses and lands for one year after my decease, except only my lease lands, and she or her assigns shall have free access to my houses and lands, and be allowed to carry away all such things as she or her assigns have upon the premises for eight weeks after that year
  • I give my wife yearly for life two quarters of wheat and two quarters of barley, measured by a lawful bushel, and 6s 8d in money, to be delivered at [Christmas and Lady Day] at the mansion house of Robert Barr in Grove by even portions in consideration of her thirds and dower.
  • I give her yearly for life one cow, to be well kept at the cost of my son Richard and his heirs etc both in winter and summer.
  • My wife Fryswyde shall immediately after my decease deliver to my son Richard a sufficient release of all her right or title to any of my lands etc by reason of her thirds or dower, when lawfully required by Richard or his assigns.
  • If Richard or his heirs refuse to deliver the corn, to pay the money or to keep the cow as I have laid down, my wife may enter upon, hold and keep any of my lands and tenements for her thirds and dower.
  • I give my son Thomas Barr three quarters of barley, to be delivered within three years after my decease.
  • I give my son John Barr two quarters of barley, one platter and one pottinger, to be delivered within two years after my decease.
  • I give my son Robert Barr two quarters of barley, one platter, one pottinger and one brass pot which I bought for him, to be delivered within two years after my decease.
  • I give my daughter Elizabeth Barr two quarters of barley, one platter, one pottinger and one brass pot which I bought for her, to be delivered within two years after my decease.
  • If any of my children die before inheriting, their legacies shall be divided equally between the survivors at the discretion of my overseers.
  • I give each of the children of my daughter Margery one sheep to be delivered within one year after my decease.
  • I give each of the children of my daughter Agnes one sheep to be delivered within one year after my decease.
  • If any of those children die before that year is expired, their legacies are to be equally divided amongst the surviving children of Margery and Agnes (if any) at the discretion of my overseers.
  • I give to the repair of the highway between Byne Cross and Dammon Way ten loads of flint stones, to be laid within five years after my decease, two loads each year.
  • All my apparel shall be equally parted amongst the poor men in Grove at the discretion of my overseers.
  • All my other goods and cattalls I put at the disposal of my Executor to pay my debts etc, whom I make my eldest son Richard Barre.
  • Leonarde Pratt and Richard Smarte to be my overseers ... I give each of them for their pains 20d.

In the name of god Amen I Robert Barr of the pishe of Wantaige in the Countie of Barks yoman the xth daie of Januarie in the yere of or lorde god 1570 beinge whole of mynde and of p’fecte remembrance praysed be god do ordaine and make this my last will and testame’t in manner and forme folowinge Fyrst w’th hartie repetans I bequeathe my sowle to almightie god the father throwgh the merits of Jesus Christ my onlie savio’r and redeam’r Secondlie I comitt my bodie to the earth to be Christian like buried in the churchyarde of Wantage Thirdlie all my temporall goods and possessions to be disposed in manner and forme folowinge Fyrst I geve to the mother churche of Sar’ iid I geve and bequeathe to Frydeswide my wife so muche howseholde stuffe as was hers at the Daie of or marriage Also I geve and bequeathe to my saide wife my best fetherbed my best coverlet my best blankets my best sheats and all other thinges of the beste appteyninge and meet for the same Itm I geve and bequeathe to my said wife my best horse color gray and the best cowe that I have at her election and choyse and tenne shepe thone halffe of all my corne aswell in the howses as in the heyses thone halfe of my swine aswell those that be deed as those that be alive and the thirde p’te of all my powltry to be delivered to her presentlie after my Deceasse at the Discreation of my oversears Itm I will that my saide wife and her assignes shall have take and enioye all the p’ffitts of thone halffe of all my howses and lands one yere next after my Deceasse my leasse lands onlie excepted And also I will that my saide wife or her assignes shall have free egresse and regresse into and from ev’y of my saide houses and lands and carry awaie all sutche thinges as she or her assignes shall then have mor upon the p’messes eight weeks after her yere after my Decease before to her appointed shalbe ended and expired Itm I geve and bequeathe to Frywide my wife yerelie and ev’y yere w’tin one yere after my Deceasse Duringe her naturall life two quarters of wheate and two quarters of barley cleane tried and by a lawfull busshell to be measured and vis viiid of good and lawfull money of Englande to be Delyvered and paide to my saide wife or her assignes by the handes of Richard my sonne his heires or assignes in manner and forme folowinge that ys to saye att the Feasts of the natyvitie of or lorde god and at the Feast of thanunciation of or blessed Ladie St Mary the vyrgyn att the mansion howse of the saide Robert Barr in Grove aforesaid by even portions in consideration of her thirds and dower Also I will that my saide wife shall have yerely duringe her naturall lieffe one cowe well and suffycyentlie to be kepte at thonlie costs and Chardges of Richarde my sonne his heires and assignes aswell in winter as in somer Item I will that Fryswyde my wieffe shall Imediatlie after my Deceasse make seale and delyver to Richarde my sonne or his assignes a good and lawfull and sufficient release of all sutche right or title as she hathe unto any of my saide landes and tenements by reason of her thirds or dowrye beinge thereunto lawfully required by the saide Richarde or his assignes Itm I will that if Richarde my sonne or his heires shall refuse to delyver the saide corne to pay the saide money or to kepe the saide Cowe in manner and forme as I have in this my last will and testament willed and appointed then I will itt shalbe lawfull to my saide wiefe or her assignes into any of my saide lands and ten'ts to entre for her thriddes and dowrie and that to holde and kepe accordinge to the lawes of the Realme anie thinge in this my last will and testam’t in any wise to the contrarie not w’thstandinge Itm I geve and bequeathe to Thomas Barr my sonne three quarters of Barley to be delyvered to him w’tin three yeres next after my Deceasse Itm I geve and bequeathe to John Barr my sonne two quarters of barley one platter and one pottenger to be Delyvered to him w’tin two yeres next after my Deceasse.
