Died 8 Jan 1728/29 age 33. The contributrix supplies the following: Richard Bradgate began as a matriculated apothecary in Oxford but had to be matriculated again so that he could take over a tavern that supplied All Souls and University Colleges with their wine. Thomas Hearne wrote in his diary on 9 Jan 1729: “Yesterday morning ... died suddenly Mr. Bradgate, keeper of the Three Tuns Tavern in High St., Oxford, a man of about 37 years of age, who hath had the tavern about 10 years.” He went on to say that Bradgate “was by trade an apothecary, but leaving off that business, he took the said Tavern, having married one Mrs. Elizabeth Matthews, who is now about 30 years of age, a fine, stately, beautifull, large young Woman, but very proud & empty of sense, as her husband also was, and a great Company Keeper”. Tm Richardi Bradgate In the Name of God Amen I Richard Bradgate of the University of Oxon Apothecary being sick in body but of sound mind and memory do make this my last Will and Testament in manner ffollowing Viz't in the ffirst place I Commend my Soul into the hands of Allmighty God hopeing for pardon and Remission of all my sins thro’ the mediation of my Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ and my body I Committ to the Earth to be buryed in such manner and in such place as my Executrix hereinafter named shall think fit and as to my worldly Estate wherewith God hath blessed me I dispose thereof in manner ffollowing First I will that all my debts shall be paid and the better to enable my Executrix to performe the same I charge all my personall Estate whatsoever with the payment thereof and if that shall not be sufficient to pay the whole then my Will is that my Estate at Bladon in the County of Oxon which I hold by Copy of Inheritance off and from his Grace the Duke of Marlborough shall be chargeable and charged with payment of such of my Debts as my personall Estate shall not be sufficient to pay and discharge and I will that they be all paid and satisfied as soon as Conveniently may be after my decease and after my debts and ffunerall Expences shall be fully paid and satisfied I give one Moiety or half portion [of the?] said Estate at Bladon to my dear and loving Wife Elizabeth Bradgate during the Term of her Naturall life and after her decease to such Child or Children of her body by me begotten or to be begotten as shall be living at her decease and their Heirs and the other Moyetie of my said Estate at Bladon I give and devise to such Child or Children of the body of my said Wife by me begotten or to be begotten as shall be living at the time of my decease or as my said Wife shall be then enseint with and their Heires but if there be no Child or Children of the body of my said Wife by me begotten living at the time of my decease and if my said Wife shall not be then ensient with Child I will that that last mentioned moiety of my said Bladon Estate shall descend and go to my own Relations in such manner as the Law directs as I would also have the first mentioned moyety of the said Estate do after the decease of my said Wife if she shall leave no Issue by me living at the time of her decease Item I give Item I give [sic] devise and bequeath unto my said dear Wife all that my Messuage or Tenement with all its Appurtenances whatsoever which I hold by Lease from the President and Scholars of St. Mary Magdalen College in Oxford which said Messuage is scituate and being in the Parish of St. Peter in the East in the City of Oxon and is now in my own possession To have and to hold the same to my said Wife during all the remainder of the Term of years then in being which shall be then to come and unexpired if she shall so long live and after her decease I give the same to such Child or Children of her body by me begotten or to be begotten and their Executors and Administrators as shall be living at the time of her Decease and if there shall be none such then living my Will and desire is that my said Wife shall dispose of the Remainder of the said Term or any other renewed form in the premisses to such person or persons and in such manner as she shall think fitt And I give and bequeath to my said Wife all my personall Estate goods and Chattells whatsoever to be by her applyed towards payment of my Just debts as aforesaid and I do hereby make ordain and appoint my said dear and loving Wife Elizabeth Bradgate sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament revoking and hereby Annulling all former and other wills by me at any time heretofore made In Witness whereof I the said Richard Bradgate have hereunto sett my hand and seale this three and twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and Nineteen Rich'd.
