  • My body is to be buried in the churchyard of Hook Norton.
  • I give to the maintenance of the church (of Hook Norton)12d.
  • I give to the poor people in Hook Norton 5s to be distributed at the discretion of my overseers.
  • I give my son William my free tenement in Hook Norton as soon as my tenant Humreis' lease expires, and 2 sheep.
    If my son William dies before my tenant's lease expires, that legacy goes to my son George if he is alive, otherwise to remain to my Executors.
  • I give my son George £20 at age 20.
  • I give my two daughters Margery and Gillian each £20, to be paid at marriage or within seven months later.
  • I give my daughters Alice and Mary each 20 marks at age 18.
  • I give my daughter Wyton 20s to be paid within a year after my decease.
  • I give my cousin Richard Walford a sheep.
  • I give my goddaughter Joyes Sutts 12d and the rest of my godchildren 4d each.
  • I give my servant John Yngram a sheep.
  • Unless otherwise stated, the above legacies are to be paid within one month after my decease.
    If any of my children die before reaching 21 or marrying, their legacies go to my surviving and unmarried children.
  • The rest of my goods, my legacies, debts and funeral expenses paid, I give to my wife Alice and my son Richard, whom I make Executors.
  • If my wife remarries, she shall not be my Executor, but my other Executor shall give her £10 4s
  • I make my brother Walter Calcott, John Robins and Thomas Wyton my overseers.

Testamentum Thomae Calcott
de Hookenorton in Com Oxon husb.

Through the mercy of Christ obtayned by sheddinge his blood Which I Confesse all was gayned [blot] did man good Or shall doe as I trust to see ye heavenlie gods goodnes. In the land where the lyvinge be, y't find noe distresse
In the [name] of God Amen the xijth day of March in the 3oth yere of the Raigne of Soveraigne Ladye Elizabeth by the grace of god of England Fraunce and Ireland Queene defender of the faith etc. 1595 I Thomas Calcott of Hookenorton in the County of Oxford husbandman, beinge sicke in bodye but of mind and memorye and Remembraunce parfitt I thanke god thereof and Callinge to my Remembraunce I shall departe this liffe, the time and houre is uncertaine and foreseeinge as the wise doth teach to prevent diverse and sundry evills which death may enshew by his sudden Comminge breiffly in and Concerninge worldle thinges, whereof I am but a Steward here and for the which I shall make accompt for before the heavenly Auditor in the last Day Wherefore I doe at this presente day and time make ordayne and stablish this to be my last will and testam't in manner and forme followinge, th't is to say
first and principallie I commend my soule to almightie god my Creator Trustinge through the sweet Passion and bloodsheddinge of my Redeemer and Saviour Jhesu Christ, to rest amongst the elect and blessed companye of heaven
Secondarylie I committ my bodye to the ground from whence I receaved it to be buried in the Churchyeard of Hookenorton afforesaid Item I give to the mainteaunce of the said Church xijd Item I give to the poore people in hookenorton 5s to be distributed by the discretion of my overseers heareundernamed
Item I give and bequeath to William my sonne my Free Tenement in hookenorton afforesaid so sone as my Tenant humreis lease is ended and also ij sheepe. And furthermore my Will is th't if it fortune my sonne William to decease before my Tenantes lease be expired that parte or portion w'ch I have before geven and bequeathed unto him shall remain unto my Sonne George if he be lyvinge otherwise to remaine unto my Executors hereafter named. Item I give and bequeath unto my Sonne George xxli ___ Item I give and bequeath unto my two daughters Margery and Gillian to every one of them xxli to be payd in the day of their marriage or within seaven monethes after. Item I give and bequeath to Alice and Mary my daughters to every one of them xx'tie marks Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Wyton xxs to be payd within a yere after my decease Item I give to my Cosen Richard Walford a sheep Item I give to my goddaughter Joyes Sutts xijd and to every one of the rest of my godchildren iiijd . Item I give to my servant John Yngram a sheepe Item I will my bequests to be payd to my sone George at 20'tie yeres of age and to my two youngest daughters at 18'ten, the rest of my bequeaths to be payd within one moneth after my decease Item I will is that if any of my children doe decease before they shall attaine their said Ages or otherwise be married then I will that his parte or her parte so deceasinge shall Remaine to my other Children then survivinge and unmarried.
The rest of my goods unbequeathed, my legacies debts & bequests payd and my funerall done I give unto Alice my Wiffe and Richard my Sonne whome I doe ordayne and make my wholl Executors of this my last Will and Testament Provided also th't if my said wiffe doe chaunce to marry then my will is shee shall not be ___ my Executor butt my fore said Executor shall give to her 10li 4s Rest then ceste I give to my foresaid Executor And for the execution and fulfillinge of this my last Will and Testament my brother Walter Calcott John Robins & Thomas Wyton I doe make my overseers whome I doe putt in trust Thus desyringe of god to be mercifull to me And to my protectour unto and at my death as I trust he will and soe I make an end
