  • My body is to be buried in the chancel of Chipping Norton.
  • I give 13s 4d to the most poorest people of Chipping Norton, to be distributed now in my lifetime.
  • I give to Margarett Hyll, daughter of Thomas Hyll of Kingham, one cow, a new coverlet of this year's making, two chargers, two candlesticks, two saucers, one bolster and pillow, a pair of sheets and £5 in money, also my black train gown and my worsted kirtle.
  • I give to Richard Hyll, son of Thomas Hyll, my best cow, one coloured coverlet embroidered with birds, one candlestick, two platters, two saucers, one pillow, one bolster, one pair of sheets, one pair of blankets and £5.
  • I give my daughter Jane Hyll my best black gown, my worsted gown, and my best silver tache hooks,
  • I give 20s each to the rest of Thomas Hylls children: James, Anthonye, Brigett, Alice, Marie, Anne, and Margerye.
    If any of them die before age 18 their legacies go to the survivors.
    The year after my death my Executor is to convert the above 20s apiece into some cattle, either kine or sheep, to be put forth for the childrens' profit.
  • I give to Margarett Hyll one pair of blankets.
  • I give my daughter Elizabeth Batson a featherbed, a bolster, a coverlet and sheets, with certain household stuff already in her own keeping.
  • I give the two sons of my daughter Batson, Richard and Harry, each a cow and ten sheep which are now in the custody of their father John Batson.
  • Whereas my son-in-law John Batson has three oxen of mine in his keeping, I give one to him (at his choice) and the other two to my Executor.
    But if John Batson be destitute of oxen for his plough, he may use the other two for one whole year after my decease, looking after them well.
  • I give the rest of my goods to my son-in-law Thomas Hyll whom I make my Executor.

Testamentum Margarete Chadwell de kentham

In the name of god amen the xxv daye of Maij Anno D’ni 1570 and the
xijth yere of the reigne of owr Soferaigne Ladie Elizabeth by the
grace of god Quene of England ffraunce and Irelande defender
of the faith etc, Wytnessith that I Margarett Chadwell of Kyngham
in the Countye of oxforde Wedowe doo make this my last Wyll
and Testamente in maner and forme following ffyrste I bequeth
my sowle to allmyghtie god alone my onely saviour and redemer
and my body to be buryed in the Channsell of Chippingnorton
It[e]m I gyve unto the moste poorest people of Chippingnorton
xiij’s iiij’d to be distributed emongest them nowe in my lyffe tyme
afore god call me to his mercye It[e]m I gyve and bequeth unto
Margarett Hyll the dawghter of Thomas Hyll of Kyngham one
cowe and an xxxx newe coverled of this yeres makyng, and two?

one coverled in colowrs w'th byrds wrowght in yt, one candlestick
two platters, two sawcers, one pyllowe, one bolster, one
payre of sheetes, one payre of blancketts and fyve pounds
in money, It[e]m I gyve unto Jane Hyll my dowghter my
best blacke gowne, my woosted gowne, and my best sylver
tache hooks, It[e]m I gyve and bequeth to the rest of Thomas
Hylls children that is, James, Anthonye with Brigett, Alice
Marie, Anne, and Margerye everye one of them xx’s
apece, and everye one of them to be others heires, yf
anye of them dye afore the age of eightene yeres Allso I
wyll that myne executor the yere after my departure
shall converte the foresaid twentie shillings apece unto
his children in to some cattell other kyne or sheepe to be
put foorth for their commoditye and profett It[e]m I gyve
unto Margarett Hyll one payre of blancketts It[e]m I gyve
unto Elizabeth Batson my dowghter a fetherbed a bolster
a coverled and sheetes with certen howsholde stuffe
beyng in her owne custodye and keping, It[e]m I gyve unto
and bequeth unto the two sonnes of my said dowghter
Batsons Richarde and Harry one skore of sheepe and
two kyne betwyxte them, that is ether of them a cowe
and ten sheepe apece and ether of them to be others heires as is afore
said in this my legacies, w'ch sheepe and kyne are in the custodye
of John Batson their ffather, It[e]m where John Batson my sonne in
Lawe hath three oxen of myne in his custodye and keping, It[e]m
I gyve unto the said John Batson one of them at his choyse, and
the other two to remayne unto my executor It[e]m yf the said
John Batson be destitute of oxen for his plowe, that he shall
ocupye the foresaid two oxen for the space of one whole
yere after my deceasse keping of them well And the rest of all
my goods not gyven nor bequeathed I doo gyve them unto Thom's
Hyll my sonne in Lawe whom I doo make my hole executor of
this my Last wyll and Testamente to be fullfylled after my
