Coates Thomas of Oxford In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Coates of the Parish of St Mary Magdalen in the City of Oxford Lathrender being weak in body but of a perfect and sound Mind Memory and Understanding Thanks be given to Almighty God for the same Do for the Disposing of that Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following And first I Commend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty god and my Body to the Earth to be buried in such decent manner as my Executor hereinafter named shall think fit in the Parish Church of Saint Mary Magdalen in the City of Oxford as near to my late Wife as possible may be Also I will that all my just Debts & Funeral Expences shall be paid and Discharged Also I give unto my Nephew Thomas Coates Eldest Son of my Brother William Coates All that my Messuage or Tenement wherein I now live together with all other my Messuages or Tenements thereunto adjoining scituate lying and being in the said Parish of St Mary Magdalen together with all ways Easements Profitts Commoditys Advantages Hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging and all other my Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments scituate lying and being in the said Parish of Saint Mary Magdalen To have and to hold the same unto my said Nephew Thomas Coates for and during the term of his natural Life And from and after the Decease of my said Nephew Thomas Coates I give devise and bequeath All those my Messuages or Tenements w'th the appurtenances in the said Parish of Saint Mary Magdalen unto my Kinsman Thomas Coates son of my said Nephew Thomas Coates his Heirs and Assigns forever Also I give unto my nephew William Coates another son of my Brother William Coates All that my Messuage or Tenement Lands and Hereditaments with their appurtenances scituate lying and being in the Parish of Ensham in the County of Oxford commonly called or known by ye name of the Bowles now in ye Possession of Robert? Wixon To have and to hold the same unto my said Nephew William Coates his Heirs and Assigns for ever I Likewise give and bequeath unto my said Nephew William Coates all ye Rent that shall be due to me from ye same at ye time of my Decease Also I give and bequeath unto my said Nephew William Coates All that my Messuage or Tenement Lands and Hereditaments in Ensham aforesaid now in the possession of William Curtis and William Price and which I hold by vertue of a Mortgage from Robert Rossom? of ye City of Oxford Butcher To have and to hold the same unto my said Nephew William Coates his Heirs and Assigns for ever Also I give and bequeath unto my Neice Mary Severn the Sum of five hundred pounds Lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid within three months next after my Decease [if] she be then Living Also I give unto my Neice Mary Cox the Wife of WIlliam Cox the Sum [of] one Hundred and ffifty pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain Also I give unto my Nephew William Hewett Slatter the Sum of Two Hundred and ffifty pounds of Lawfull money of Great Britain Also I give and bequeath unto my Nephew Charles Pugh of the Parish of St Peter in ye Baily Innkeeper the Sum of One Hundred pounds of good and lawfull money of Great Britain Also I give unto my Nephew Thomas Hughes ye Slatters Son the sum [of] ffifty pounds of lawfull money and my Neice his Sister the like sum of Fifty Pounds of like lawfull money Also I give unto my Maid Mary Hutt the Sum of One Hundred and ffifty Pounds of like Lawfull money (if she be living with me at the time of my Decease) and my Will and Meaning is that the said Legacy's herein before given for the said Mary Cox William Hewett Charles Pugh and my Nephew Thomas Hughes's Son and Daughter and likewise Mary Hutt shall be paid within Three months next after my Decease Also I give unto my Brother William Coates the Weekly sum of Ten Shillings to be issuing and going out of All that my Messuage or Tenement wherein I now live for and during the term of his naturall Life to be paid by my said Nephew Thomas Coates on Monday in every Week during his Life And my Will and meaning also is that in Case the said Weekly Sum of Ten Shillings shall not be well and truly paid unto my said Brother (Tho: Coates (O)) William Coates Weekly as aforesaid according to the true intent and meaning of this my Will It shall and may be lawfull to and for my said Brother William Coates and his Assigns to Enter into the said Messuage or Tenement wherein I now live and distrain And the Distress and Distresses then and there found to take Carry away and Impound untill the said Weekly Sum of Ten Shillings shall be fully paid and discharged unto my said Brother William Coates Also I give and bequeath unto my Niece Elizabeth Coates Daughter of Thomas Coates my Executor the Sum of Fifty Pounds and to my Neice Ann Coates another Daughter of ye said Thomas Coates the like Sum of Fifity Pounds Also I Give unto Edward Coates (if he be alive) the Sum of Fifty pounds Also I give my Nephew William Coates the Sum of fifty pounds And my Will and meaning further is that all these last mentioned Legacies shall be paid within Three Months next after my Decease by my Executor Thomas Coates Also my Will and Desire is and I do hereby Nominate and appoint my Friends Richard Tawney of ye Parish of St Thomas in the City of Oxford Brewer and John Quartermain of the Parish of Saint Giles in the said City of Oxford Brewer overseers of this my Will and desire them to see this my Will performed in all aspects by my Executor hereinafter named and for their pains and trouble therein I do give unto each of them the Sum of Fifteen pounds Also all the rest of my Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments Goods Chattells Moneys Securitys for Money and all other my freehold and Personall Estate whatsoever not hereinbefore otherwise dispos'd of And my Debts Legacy's and ffuneral Expences being first paid and discharged I Give devise and bequeath unto my said Nephew Thomas Coates Son of my said Brother William Coates his Heirs Executors and Administrators And Lastly I do hereby Nominate Constitute and appoint my said Nephew Thomas Coates ye Sole Executor of this my Will hereby revoking and void [sic] all other Wills by me at any time made In Witness whereof I have to this my last Will and Testament Consisting of Two Sheets of Paper to each Sheet thereof set my hand and Seal this Twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord 1748.
