  • I give the following sums of money:
    • £20 each to the seven children of my deceased cousin Richard Hawes, of Handborough.
    • £20 each to the five children of Charles Colliver, formerly of Kiddington.
    • £30 each to the two children of my cousin George Tennant of Charlbury.
    • £10 each to my cousin John Tennant of Taston and Ann Washburn
    • £20 to my cousin Philip Johnson Sr of Wootton.
    • £10 each to Philip Johnson Jr and Thomas Johnson, both of Wootton, and £20 to Elizabeth Johnson, children of Philip Johnson Sr.
    • 10s each to the seven children of my Aunt Harris, the three children of my Uncle Stephen Copland and the two children of my Aunt Butcher.
  • I give the following clothes and goods:
      To my cousin Elizabeth Tennant my best green and white suit of clothes with the remaining pieces [of cloth] that belong to it, also my best quilted coat, two holland shifts (in the box of linen), and my velvet hood.
    • To my cousin Anne Colliver my satin clothes, my changeable silk night-gown, my stays, my scarlet quilted coat, my best black quilted coat and my black gown.
    • My blue silk gown and what silk [cloth] is left of it to Susannah Hawes.
    • My mother's best flowered gown and black coat to my cousin Elizabeth Johnson.
    • All the rest of my mother's woollen clothes, her Bengal gown, all her coarse home-made shifts and her stays to my cousin Elizabeth Colliver.
    • My jack to my cousin Elizabeth Washburn.
    • The jack and spit now in her own possession to Grace Rogers.
    • All my own and my mother's linen which is in the drawers of the lower part of my scrutore [escritoire?] equally divided between my cousins Elizabeth Tennant, Ann Colliver and Susannah Hawes.
    • All my mother's headcloths to my cousin Elizabeth Colliver.
    • A checked and enamelled gold ring, the Death's Head being worn out, to my Uncle George Copland.
    • The best plain gold ring to Susannah Hawes.
    • My little stone ring and my other least ring to John Flexen, son of Richard Flexen
    • The little round table to Mrs Elizabeth Gardner.
    • All my pictures belonging to the New Room to my cousin Richard Tennant.
    • My side-saddle and scrutore [escritoire?] and best hand whip to my cousin Elizabeth Johnson.
    • My white rug to my cousin Mary Johnson, wife of Philip Johnson Sr.
    • All the rest of my old gowns, petticoats and coarse shifts, also the black and white window curtains in the New Room, to my former maid Mary Edwards
    • All the rest of my household goods equally divided between my cousins John Tennant of Taston, Mary Johnson wife of Philip Johnson, and Elizabeth Colliver.
  • I give all the rest of my goods, chattels and estate to Philip Johnson Sr whom I make sole Executor.
    He is to bury me beside my father and mother in the same manner as my mother was buried, and put up three pairs of handsome gravestones for us.

Codicil (undated)
  • I give all the linen that is not already given (in the two great boxes) to my cousin Richard Hawes’s children, and a ring to each one.
  • I give the silver cup to Silvester Harris and the biggest silver spoon to Elizabeth Harris, son and daughter of Richard Harris (see Note).
  • None of my household goods are to be distributed until I am buried and all my debts and charges paid.
  • My Executor is to pay no legacies until he has received the money.
  • What I give to Susannah Hawse I mean [Susannah] the younger.
Affidavit 8 Jul 1736

Appeared personally Edward Ryves of Woodstock, gentleman, and swore:
  • That he was well acquainted with [the deceased] for some time before her death, which happened in June as this Deponent is informed and believes.
  • That he drew up her annexed will, dated 30 Mat 1736, from her instructions.
  • That the interlineations and obliterations now appearing in the will were made by him before the will was executed by the directions of the deceased.
  • That he is well acquainted with her hand-writing, and having carefully perused the annexed codicil [details] he believes the codicil and signature to be [written by her]
  • Sworn before me Charles Rinfold Surrogate in the presence of Ever Sayer, Notary Public.

I Hannah Copland of Charlbury in the County of Oxford Spinster
being Weak in Body but of Sound and Disposing Mind and
Understanding Thanks be to God do make this my Last Will and
Testament in manner following and first and principally I Recommend
my Soul to God and my Body to the Earth to be decently buried
according to such Directions as I have given or shall give concerning
the same and as for such Worldly Estate as it hath pleased God to
bless Me with I dispose of as follows I give unto the Seven Children
of my late Cousin Richard Hawes formerly of Handborough in
Oxfordshire the Sum of Twenty Pounds apiece Item I give unto
the Five Children of Charles Colliver late of Kiddington in
Oxfordshire Twenty Pounds apiece Item I give unto the Two
Children of my Cousin George Tennant of Charlbury in Oxfordshire
Thirty Pounds apiece Item I give unto my Cousin John Tennant
Of Taston in Oxfordshire Ten Pounds Item I give unto my Cousin
Ann Washburn Ten Pounds Item I give unto my Cousin Philip
Johnson the Elder of Wootton aforesaid Twenty Pounds Item I

unto Susannah Hawes the best plain Gold Ring Item I give my little

Item I give unto my Cousin Richard Tennant all my Pictures
belonging to the New Room Item I give my Side Saddle and Scrutore

is That my Executor will bury Me in the same manner as my Mother
was buried and by my Father and Mother and that He put up Three
Pair of Handsome Gravestones for Us In Witness whereof I Hannah
Copland have hereunto Set my Hand and Seal the Thirtieth day of
May in the Ninth Year of King George the Second and in the Year
of our Lord 1736 Hannah Copland Signed Sealed Published and
Declared by the said Hannah Copland as and for her Last Will and
Testament in the presence of Us and then Subscribed by Us as Witnesses
in her presence the Interlineations and Erasures being first made

I desire this to be taken as part of my Will I give all the
Linnen but what is given away before as is in the Two great Boxes
to my Cousin Richard Hawes’s Children and every One a Ring and I
give to Silvester Harris the Silver Cup and I give to Elizabeth Harris
the biggest Silver Spoon the Son and Daughter of Richard Harris and
I would have none of my Household Goods Distributed till I am
buried and all my Debts and all my Charges paid and I would have my
Executor pay no Legacies till he has received the Money What I give
To Susannah Hawse I mean the Younger

                     8th July 1736
Appeared personally Edward Ryves of Woodstock
in the County of Oxford Gentleman and by virtue of his Corporal Oath
deposed that He was well acquainted with Hannah Copland late of
Charlbury in the County of Oxford Spinster Deceased for some time
before her Death which happened in the Month of June last past as
this Deponent is informed and verily believes and He further deposed
That He the Deponent from Instructions given Him by the said Hannah
Copland Deceased drew her Last Will and Testament hereunto annexed
bearing Date the Thirtieth Day of May in the Ninth Year of King
George the Second And in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven
Hundred and Thirty Six and that the several Interlineations and
Obliterations now appearing in the said Will and more particularly

in the First Third Eleventh Twelfth Twenty Third Thirty Eighth Thirty
Ninth Forty first and Forty Fifth Lines in the said Will were made
done and altered by this Deponent before the said Will was Executed
by the Directions of the said Deceased and He further Deposed that
He is well acquainted with the Manner and Character of the Hand
Writing of the said Deceased and having now seen and carefully perused
the Codicill or Testamentary Disposition of the said Deceased hereunto
annexed beginning thus I desire this to be taken as part of my Will
and ending thus what I give to Susannah Hawse I mean the Younger
and this Deponent doth verily believe the said Codicill and Subscription
Hannah Copland to be all of the proper Handwriting of the said
Hannah Copland deceased Edw: Ryves The same day the said
Edward Ryves was sworn to the Truth of the above Affidavit Before
Me Charles Rinfold Surrogate Present Ever Sayer Notary Publick

This Will was proved at London (with a Codicil annexed)
Before the Right Worshipful John Bettesworth Doctor of Laws Master
Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury
Lawfully Constituted On the Ninth Day of July In the Year of Our
Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Six By the Oath of
Philip Johnson the Sole Executor named in the said Will To Whom
Administration was granted of all and Singular the Goods Chattels
and Credits of the Deceased He being first Sworn by Commission
well and truely to Administer the same.
