  • I give £80 to my godson and nephew Richard Eyans, son of my brother Richard Eyans, to be paid as and when my Executor thinks most proper.
  • I give £10 to my brother-in-law Richard Harris for mourning.
  • I give £5 to Thomas Beman, son of Thomas and Anne Beman of Charlbury, to be paid within a year after my decease.
  • I give £20 to Nicholas Marshall of Church Enstone, gentleman, to be paid within a year after my decease and disposed by him as follows:
    • £15 to place out as apprentice three poor children of Church Enstone such as he thinks most suitable.
    • £5 to be distributed at his discretion amongst such poor widows, old maids and orphans of Church Enstone as seem most in need.
  • I give £5 to the church-wardens and overseers of the poor of Charlbury, to be paid within a month after my decease and distributed by them amongst such poor widows and orphans of Charlbury as they think fit.
  • I give 20s each to John Coles and George Copland, gentlemen, both of Charlbury, to the Reverend Richard Griffis of Burford, clerk, and to the minister who attends me in my sickness and at my funeral, to buy rings.
  • I give £5 to my maid-servant who is living with me at my decease.
  • I give the following to the children of my late sister Mary Harris:
    • All my books, equally distributed between them.
    • To her eldest son Richard Harris a diamond cypher ring, a silver cup and a silver spoon, a large damask tablecloth and six damask napkins.
    • To her son Samuel Harris a large gold piece.
    • To her youngest son Silvester Harris a plain gold ring.
    • To her eldest daughter Elizabeth Harris a chest of drawers, a dressing box, a comb box, a dressing glass, a child mantle, a holland sheet and two pairs of fine holland pillowbiers.
    • To her other daughter Anne Harris a pearl necklace.
  • I give all my household goods, household linen and wearing apparel to Mrs Rebecca Harris of Charlbury In Trust for her to distribute [them] equally between my above nieces Elizabeth and Ann Harris.
  • After payment of my debts, the above legacies and my funeral expenses I give all the rest of my goods, chattels, ready money, debts and personal estate to the above John Coles, George Copland and Richard Griffis, to be paid within a year after my decease In Trust to be distributed (with any interest etc, and their own charges being first paid) equally between all the children of my above sister at age 21 or earlier marriage.
    If any of them die before inheriting their shares are to be equally divided amongst the survivors.
    If they all die before inheriting, the legacies go to my own right heirs.
  • I appoint William Rollinson Esq of Chadlington as sole Executor ... I revoke all former wills.

Elizabeth Eyans

In the Name of God Amen
I Elizabeth Eyans of Charlbury in the County of Oxford
Spinster being indisposed in Body but of Sound and perfect
mind and memory Do make and ordain this my last Will and
Testament in manner and Form following that is to say First I
give devise and bequeath unto my Godson and Nephew Richard
Eyans the Son of my Brother Richard Eyans the Sum of Eighty
pounds to be paid him in such Proportion and in such manner
as my Executor hereafter named shall think most fitt and proper
Also I give unto my Brother in Law Richard Harris the Sum of ten
pounds for Mourning Also I give unto Thomas Beman the Son
of Thomas and Anne Beman of Charlbury aforesaid the Sum
of Five pounds to be paid him within one year next after my
Decease Also I give and bequeath unto Nicholas Marshall of
Church Enstone in the County of Oxford aforesaid Gentleman the

Sum of twenty pounds to be paid him within one year next after
my decease to be by him disposed of in such manner as herein
after is mentioned Viz't the sum of Fifteen pounds part thereof
to place out Apprentice three such Poor Children of Church
Enstone aforesaid as he shall think most fitt and proper and the
Sum of Five pounds residue of the said twenty pounds to be by
him distributed amongst such poor Widows Old Maids and
Orphans of Church Enstone aforesaid in such proportion and
in such manner as their Necessities in his discretion shall
be most meet and proper Also I give and bequeath unto the
Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of Charlbury
aforesaid the Sum of Five pounds to be paid them within One
month next after my decease to by them [sic] distributed amongst
such Poor Widows and Orphans of Charlbury aforesaid in
such manner and in such proportion as they shall think fitt
Also I give unto John Coles and George Copland both of
Charlbury aforesaid Gentlemen and the Reverend Richard
Griffis of Burford in the said County of Oxford Clerk and the
Minister that shall attend me in my Sickness and at my funeral
twenty shillings each to buy them rings Also I give to my
Maid servant that shall live with me at the time of my
decease the sum of Five pounds Also I give and bequeath all
my Books to be equally distributed amongst all the Children
of my late Sister Mary Harris Also I give and bequeath unto
my Nephew Richard Harris Eldest Son of my said Sister a
Diamond Cypher ring a Silver Cup and Silver Spoon One large
Damask table Cloth and Six Damask Napkins Also I give unto
my Nephew Samuel Harris one other Son of my said Sister

I give unto my Niece Elizabeth Harris Eldest Daughter of my

holland pillowbiers Also I give unto my Niece Anne Harris the
other Daughter of my said Sister One Pearl Necklace Also I give
and bequeath unto Mrs Rebecca Harris of Charlbury aforesaid
All and singular my Houshold Goods Houshold Linnen and Wearing
Apparell In trust for her to distribute and dispose of the same unto
my said Nieces Elizabeth Harris and Ann Harris Share and Share
alike All the rest and residue of my Goods Chattells ready money
Debts and Personal Estate (after my said Legacys and my Just
Debts and Funeral Expences are paid and discharged) I give devise
and bequeath unto the said John John [sic] Coles George Copland
and Richard Griffis to be paid and delivered to them within
One year after my decease In trust that they the said John
Coles George Copland and Richard Griffis shall pay and
distribute the same with the Interest and produce thereof (the
said trustees Charges being first defrayed and discharged)
amongst all the Children of my said Sister Share and Share
alike at their several and respective Ages of One and twenty
years or days of Marriage which shall first happen And my
Will is that if either or any of the said Children shall dye

before his her or their Legacys shall become due or payable Then
my Will is that his her or their share shall be equally divided amongst
the rest of the said Children that shall be then Living And if it shall
happen that all the said Children shall dye before their Legacys
shall become due Then my Will is that the said Legacys shall
descend to the Right Heirs of me the said Elizabeth Eyans And I
do hereby make constitute and appoint William Rollinson of
Chadlington in the said County of Oxford Esquire Sole Executor of
this my last Will and Testament and do hereby revoke
disannull and make void all former Wills by me before this time
made Confirming this and no other as my last Will and
Testament In Witness Whereof I the said Elizabeth Eyans to
this my last Will and Testament have sett my hand and seal
the thirteenth day of November in the year of Our Lord One
thousand Seven hundred and thirty Seven Eliz: Eyans.
Signed Sealed Published and declared by the said Elizabeth Eyans
the Testator as her last Will and Testament in the presence of
us and Subscribed by us as Witnesses in her presence John
Turtle Thomas Bowerman Rich'd Dell.

         November 28: 1739.
Whereas I have left in my Will to my trusty
Servant Elizabeth Edwards Five pounds for the late Services she
has done me in my late Illness I desire the Five pounds
mentioned in my Will may be made up twenty pounds. Eliz:
Eyans. Witness. Thomas Rollinson Sarah Ball.

This Will was proved at London (with a Codicil
annexed) the Twenty Sixth day of January in the year of
Our Lord One thousand Seven hundred and Forty before the
Worshipfull Robert Chapman Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the
Right Worshipfull John Bettesworth Doctor of Laws Master
Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury
lawfully constituted By the Oath of William Rollinson Esquire
the Sole Executor in the said Will named to whom Adm'tion
was granted of all and singular the Goods Chattells and
Creditts of the said deceased being first Sworn duly to Administer.
