... I Alexander Fetiplace of BRK Childrey ... My body is to be buried in the aisle of St Katherine of Childrey if I happen to die there. My funeral charges and the disposition of certain money to the poor I reserve? to the discretion of my executors I give to every one of my servants being a yeoman that has stayed with me four years 6s 8d I give to Dorothy Phetiplace my wife all the following plate: the gilt goblets under a cover and a ring, two little silver goblets under a cover with a ring, one gilt bowl with a rose, one bowl of silver parcel gilt with a S__ke pricked in the bottom, one standing cup bought of Edward Gline, five silver spoons tipped with acorns, one spoon gilt with a s__ke, one ale cup with a cover bought of Mr ___ Edmirthe of Reading, 6 silver spoons bought of the said Mr ___ with angels at the tips; all which plate I give to my wife for life, on condition that if she re-marries she shall find [a] sufficient surety to be bound with her before she marries to deliver the plate to my Executors for the use of my son Christopher Fetiplace. If Christopher dies before age 20 then all the above plate shall remain to my children by Dorothy. I give my wife Dorothy all the grain, corn and hay as remains at the time of my death at Letcombe Bassett or in the corn barns for her own use, also all tithes and fallows and grains sown at the time of my death. Also I give her all the grain, corn and hay or cattle as remain at the time of my death in my chantry barns, formerly Sir Edmond de Childrey's, which I purchased. I give her all the goods, chattels etc within the s__the_ of the said chantry house, moveable or unmoveable, remaining at the time of my death, without any interference from my executors. I give her twenty kine and one bull to be drawn out of my pasture of wood? for her own use. I give her 4 feather-beds, whereof one is to be my little down bed and bolster bought of my ?tenant Pegge, with a pair of fustian blankets to the same and a coverlet which I bought of Ms ?Grant; another feather-bed and bolster which she bought herself with a pair of fustians and two new pillows which she bought and one great coverlet unlined; another feather-bed with the bolster which used to lie over my buttery at Childrey with all the furniture as I used to lie in it myself; the fourth bed to be the bed which used to be in my sister's chamber, with a pair of woollen blankets, one pair of pillows and a coverlet which is with a white lion. I give my wife my great chest with the broken hasps and two locks [and] one yellow grease chest bought at London. She is to have all such jewels, goods and stuff which she brought with her to me. I give her two pairs of my finest sheets which she uses when in child-bed; also one piece of diaper which was never used. I give to Cicily Phetiplace my daughter £100 to be levied of my lands in Swinbrook immediately after my death, to be delivered to Cissie when she reaches age 18 by my trusty feoffees Edmond Plowden and [blurred] Esquires (the said feoffment annexed to my will dated 10 Jun 1554) If Cicily dies before 18 then my daughter Mary shall have the £100 over and above her own legacies. Out of the rest of the moiety to be levied out of my manor of Swinbrooke during ten years after my decease I give to Mary my daughter £100. If Mary dies before age 18 and her sister Cicily is living then I will that my feoffees shall pay the £100 to Cicily immediately after Mary's death. I give my son Anthony Fetiplace all such interest, right or title which I have in the Parsonage of Swinbrooke by virtue of a lease which I bought. I give Anthony all the grain and all my goods, chattels or implements of household as shall be found in or upon the houses or grounds of the Parsonage. If both Cicily and Mary die (god forbid) before reaching 18 then their £200 is to be evenly divided between my two sons Christopher and Anthony if both are living, else the whole £200 to the survivor. If neither of my two sons are living (god forbid) then the £200 is to be given to Alexander Phetiplace my godson and one of the sons of William Phetiplace my son and heir late deceased. I bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth 200 marks to be paid within one year after my decease unless I provide otherwise for her in my life-time. If Elizabeth dies before that year is ended, then my executors shall pay the 200 marks to my son Anthony Fettiplace when he reaches age 20. I give my wife all the household stuff in or about the house at Childrey with all the t____ implements thereto belonging, ploughs and ploughshares? earth? and cart gears. I give to Alice Aldsworthe £5 at the day of marriage. I will that within four days after my decease my executors shall make with my other sheep a perfect flock or stock of 500 wether sheep after five score to every hundred on my farm of BRK Up Letcombe, if there shall not be so many sheep there pasturing in one flock the day of my decease. Dorothy my wife and her Executors etc shall have the use and occupation and profits of those sheep and farm and all the other lands and Tenements etc in Letcombe which I have for years of the Assignment of John __ide gent deceased, and also of twenty acres of meadow ground in the old fields which I hold by lease of Queens College in Oxford, from the day of my decease until Christopher Phetiplace my son reaches age 21 if he survives. My wife or her Executors etc shall use part of the clear yearly issues and profits thereof to bring up my son in learning, as well at the grammar after his easement? thereof as in the study of the common laws of this realm, and the rest of the clear issues and profits thereof, the flock of sheep always maintained and other charges deducted, shall yearly [be invested] in the flock on behalf of Christopher, and which shall be delivered to him at or before age 21 if he marries, unless any good farm office or other living may be therewith obtained by my wife or her Executors etc before his said age or marriage. The said farm lands, tenements and meadows and the leases thereof for the years to come after my decease I give to Christopher. If he dies unmarried before age 21 leaving Dorothy [alive] then I will to Dorothy not only such clear issues and profits thereof as shall be received to the use of Christopher and remain unpaid, but also such farm or other living as [might have been] obtained for him as aforesaid, and my wife shall have the profits of the farm, lands, Tenements, meadows, flock of sheep etc to her own use for life if the years in the [leases etc] shall so long continue If my wife and son Christopher both die before Christopher reaches 21, or if Christopher dies before 21 whereby my wife has the profits etc for her life as above but she dies before the leases etc have expired, then the said farm, lands, Tenements and meadows shall for the remaining years of the leases, together with the said stock of sheep, go to my son and heir William Phetiplace to whom I give the farm and also the indentures of leases thereof. If William has died then the premises demised to him shall remain to the use of such of my children as shall have most need thereof. I grant to my son Christopher Phettiplace all the Indentures of Lease for term of years which I do? assign of Nicholas Weston yeoman have in the manor of Letcombe Regis with the appurtenances, and of other lands, Tenements etc in Letcombe Regis, and of the Office of the Bailiwick of the said manor, and all my estate, right, title, term of years and interest which I now have in the manor, bailiwick and [everything else mentioned in the leases], to hold to hijm and his assigns for the remaining years of the leases. If my son Christopher dies before reaching 21 or marrying then I grant the said Indenture of the manor of Letcombe Regis and [all the rest as above] to my son Anthony Fetyplace If he has died I give it to Alexannder Fettiplace my godson second son to my son William Fettiplace. For default of him, to his lawfully begotten son and heir. The rest of my goods unbequeathed, my debts, legacies and funeral charges paid, I give to my well beloved son Christopher Phetiplace and in William Wolescot of Tidmarsh whom I make my only executor. For overseers I most heartily desire my brother-in-law Mr Michael Hampden and my brother-in-law Mr Thomas Ashefeilde to take the pains. I Alexannder ffetiplace of Childrie in the Countie of Berke pefect of mynd and memorie, Laudinge and praying Almightie god Calling to my Remembrance the mortalitie of this Transitory Lief, And that there is nothing so uncertain as The Tyme thereof make and Ordeine this my Laste will and Testament in name and fforme ffollowinge ffirste I bequeathe my soule to almightie god my Creature and Redemer and to all the hole Companie of of heaven And, my bodie to be Buried in the Ile of St Katherine of Childie aforseide if I happen there to departe this lief and as for the chardges of my ffuneralles and the Disposition [supra ?] of certen money to the pore I Resarve? yt unto the discretion and Orderinge of my executors Item I give to everie of my servants being a yeoman that hath continued with me by the space of ffoure yeares vis viiid. Yeares in the said devises be Expyred Then I will and my mynde is that the said said ffarme Landes Tenementes and medowes shall for The yeares in either of them then to come and not determined to gather With the said Stocke of Shepe Growe Come and to be to my sonne and heire William Phetiplace to whom I Give the farme and also the said Indentures of Leases thereof And yf the said Willm be not then lyvinge Then I will that the Premises demised to my said sonne Willm shall remaine and come to the Use of suche of my children as shall have most neede thereof to whom I give the same And furder I the said Alexannder will devise and give and Grante to my said sonne Christopher Phettiplace All that the Indentures of Lease for terme of yeares which I the said Alexannder do assigne of Nicholas Weston yeoman have of in and to the manner of Letcome Regis in the said Countie of Berke wt the Appurtenance And of other Landes Tenements and hereditamentes With th’appurtenances in Letcome Regis in the said Countie of Berke And Off the Office of the Bailieswicke of the said manner And all my estate Righte title terme of yeares and interest which I the said Alexannder now have by any weie or meanes Whatsoever of in and to the said manner Landes Tenementes Balie?
