  • I give my son Samuell the £20 which he owes me on bond, and therefore desire my Executrix to deliver the bond to him for cancellation within one month after my decease.
  • After the decease of my sister-in-law Elizabeth Shortland, I give the cottage etc where Thomas Cooke now dwells in Chipping Norton to my son John Higgins for life.
    My overseers are to take the rents etc and invest them for his benefit and towards his maintenance.
    After his decease, I give [the property] to my daughter Alice Blizard and her heirs etc forever.
  • I give my close called Bull Close in the liberties of Chipping Norton to my son Joseph Higgins and his heirs etc forever.
  • I give all the rest of my goods, chattels, cattell, money, debts, plate, household stuff and everything else to my dear and loving wife Alice whom I make sole Executrix, desiring her to pay my debts.
  • Memorandum: at the ensealing thereof I appoint Mr Nehemiah Norgrove, Mr Josiah Diston of Chipping Norton and Mr Brett Goodwin of Epwell to be overseers and John Halfehead and Elisha Farmer.

In the name of God Amen I John Higgins of Chipping=
=Norton in the County of Ox’on yeoman beinge Aged &
weake in body but of sound mind and p’fect memorie
prayse be given to Almighty god for the same this
Eleaventh day of June Anno do’ni 1685 doe make &
ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner
following vizt first I bequeath my soule into the hands
of Almighty god my Creator hopeing through the merritts
of Jesus Christ my Redeemer it wilbe received into glory
And my body to the earth to be buried in such decent &
Christian manner as to my executrix hereinafter
named shalbe thought fitt And as touching my worldly
Estate I give and bequeath the same as followeth vizt
Inprimis I give unto my sone Samuell the Twenty pounds
which he oweth to me upon bond And I doe therefore desire
that my said Executrix doe deliver up to him the said
Samuell the said bond to be Cancelled wthin one moneth
next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto
my sone John Higgins the Cottage howse with its app’ten’ces
wherein Thomas Cooke now dwells in Chippingnorton
aforesaid To hold to him my said sone John Higgins and his
assignes from and Imediately after the decease of my sister in law
Elizabeth Shortland for and dureing the tearme of his naturall
life And my will is that my said Overseers of this my will
hereinafter named shall take the Rents issues and profitts
thereof And Imploy and Improve the same for the best benefitt and
Advantage of my said sone John Higgins & towards his Maintenance
And after the decease of my said sone John Higgins my will is And I doe
hereby give and bequeath my said Cottage house with its appurten’ces
unto my daughter Alice Blizard and her heires and assignes for
ever; Ite’ I give and bequeath unto my sone Joseph Higgins All that
my Close called Bull Close with its appurtenances being wthin the
liberties of Chippingnorton aforesaid To hold unto him the said
Joseph and his heires and assignes for ever; All the rest of my goods
Chattells Cattell moneys debts Plate howsehold stuffe and substance
wtsoever I give and bequeath unto my deare and loveing wife Alice
whom I doe make sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament
desireing her to pay all my Just debts which I owe either in law or
Conscience In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale
the day and yeare ffirst above written;
