CH339. Transcribed by a member of Charlbury Society Historical Research Group. The will is in Latin, at times heavily abbreviated -- the "very uncertain" 2014 translation has been amended where necessary by a former classics teacher, and is given in italics at the end of each line. The testator was only showing off about his learning -- at one point in the Codicil he seems to have become tired of it and reverted to English :-) It is assumed that "in the County South" meant "South Saxons", ie Sussex. This may be wrong. A scyphos was a type of Greek cup.

I give a silver sciphos (see Note) to each of Mary Weston of Lichfield and Francis Yale of Erthig I give my silver salt-cellar and spoons to Gabriel Lloyd, son of my brother. I give the following sums: 20 marks to Ralph Hutchinson, President of St John’s College. £3 to Anthony Ayleworth, Doctor of Medicine. 50s to my former student John Hoskins. £4 to Evans Morgan, dyer of London. £4 to Hieronymus Nash of Woodstock £4 for pious uses by the judgement of the Lord Bishop of Bangor. I confirm my bequest to him in my will, asking him to organise my burial. The little gilt bowl in my chest at Woodstock is to be delivered to Francis Harrys. I give all my writings of Cicero to Humphrey, my brother's [secretary] I give £3 to Richard Wiano. I make the above Master Hutchenson and Dr Ayleworth overseers.
