He describes John CHAUNDLER as his "son" -- he is here listed (and indexed) as son-in-law. "Brothers" Paul ORPWOOD and Randall COWELL are presumably his brothers-in-law, and if so the COWELL children are his nephews and niece.

  • My body is to be buried in the church of St Helens.
  • I give 2d to the mother church of Sarum.
  • I wish my farm at Culham to remain in my name and blood after my decease, and I give it to my son Thomas and the lawful heirs males of his body.
    For lack of such issue I give it to my second son John and the lawful heirs males of his body.
    For lack of such issue I give it to my third son Christopher and the lawful heirs males of his body.
    For lack of such issue I give it to my fourth son Richard and the lawful heirs males of his body.
    For lack of such issue I give it to my fifth son Robert and the lawful heirs males of his body.
    For lack of such issue I give it to my sixth son Nicholas and the lawful heirs males of his body.
    For lack of such issue I give it to my own right heirs for ever.
  • I give half of my household stuff of whatever nature to my wife Agnes.
  • Duringe the life of my mother Ellynor Mayott my wife is to have the benefit of all my land in Wekefield and £6 13s 4d out of my Culham farm.
    After my mother's decease my wife is to have £10 pa out of my Culham farm.
  • My wife (if she pleases, and while she remains my widow) may remain in the house in which I now live, with my son Thomas.
  • I give £40 to my daughter Katheryn, £20 to be paid on the day of her marriage and the other £20 within one year afterwards.
  • I give £49 each to my children John, Christopher, Richard, Robert, Nicholas and Ellynor Mayott, to be paid at age 24 or at such time(s) as my overseers think fit.
    As long as my wife and my son Thomas keep house together they are to have the keeping and bringing up of my children, and afterwards my son Thomas to have their keeping and bringing up.
  • I give £10 to Agnes, daughter of John Chaundler, to be paid at age 21 or earlier marriage.
  • I give 40s each to John, Randall and Sara, three of the children of my brother Randall Cowell of London, to be paid at age 21.
  • I give the residue of my goods and chattels to my son Thomas whom I make sole Executor.
  • I desire my brother Mr Paule Orpwood, Mr Robert Mayott, Mr Francis Litle, Mr Anthony Tersdall, Mr James Hyde and my son John Chaundler to be my overseers.

In the name of god Amen. The foure and twentieth day
of October in the eight and thirtith yeare of the Raigne of our soveraigne Ladie Elizabeth
by the grace of god Queene of England ffrance and Ireland Defender of the fayth etc I
Thomas Mayott thelder of the Boroughe of Abingdon in the countie of Berks gent beinge
Sicke of bodie but in good and perfecte Remembrance, thanks be unto Almighty God, Do ordaine &
make this my last will and testament in manner and forme followinge that it is to saye: fyrst I
bequeath my soule unto almightie god my maker Redeemer and saviour, and my bodie to be
buried in my parishe Church of St Hellins in Abingdon. Item I give unto the mother
church of Saru' Tow pence. And for that my will and meaninge is, my ffarme at Culneh'm
in the Countie of Oxen should remayne and contynewe in my name and blood after my
decease. Therefore I doe give and bequeath the same my farme of Cullam to my sonne Thomas
and to the heires males of his bodie lawfullie begotten, and for lacke of such yssue then the
same to remayne unto my John my second sonne and to the heires males of his bodie Lawfully
begotten. And for lacke of such yssue then the same to remayne unto X'pofer my third sonne
and to the heires males of his bodie lawfully begotten. And for lacke of suche then to remaine
unto Richard my fourth sonne and to the heires males of his bodie lawfullie begotten. And
for lacke of such yssue then to remayne unto Robert my fyveth sonne and to the heirs males
of his bodie lawfully begotten, and for lacke of such yssue then to remayne unto Nicholas
my Syxte sonne and to the heires males of his bodie lawfully begotten, And for lacke of
such yssue then to the Right heires males of his bodie of me the said Thomas Mayotte thelder
for ever: Item I give and bequeath unto Agnes my wiffe thone halfe of all my housholde
stuffe of what nature so ever the same be of, And my will is, that my said wiffe shall have
and enioye duringe the lief of my mother Ellynor Mayott, the benefytt of all my Lande in
wekefeilde and six poundes thirtene shillinges foure pence owte of my farme of Cullam during
the lief of my saide mother. And after the decease of my said mother, my will is that my saide
wief shall have Tenne pounds yearely out of my saide farme of Cullam, Item my will is that
my sayd wief (yf she please) shall Remayne and dwell in the howse wherin I nowe Inhabit
with my saide son Thomas duringe so longe tyme as she keepe her selfe sole and unmaried
Item I give & bequeath unto Katheryn my daughter ffortie pounds to be payed her in man'er
and forme followinge, Viz: twentie pounds the daye of her marriage and the other twe'ty
pounds within one yere next after her marriage. Item I give and bequeath unto John,
X'pofer, Richard, Roberte, Nicholas, and Ellynor Mayott, my sonnes & daughter, and

to every of them ffortie poundes a peece to be payde unto them at their severall ages of ffower
and twentie yeares, or at such tymes as my Overseers shall thinke convenient for them to have
yt. And that my will is, that that my wief and my sonne Thomas so longe as they keepe howse to=
gether shall have the keepinge and bringinge upp of my sayde Children, and afterwards my
sonne Thomas to have the keepinge and bringing upp of my saide Children. And Item I give and
bequeath unto Agnes the daughter of John Chaundler Tenne pounds to be payd her at her
Age of twentie one yeares or the daye of her marriage, at which of those tymes shall first
happen. Item I gyve and bequeath unto John, Randall, and Sara three of the Children of
my brother Randall Cowell of London, to every of them fortie shillings to be paide unto the'
when the [sic] shall attayne to theire severall ages of one and twentie yeares. And the resydew
of all my goods and cattells unbequeathed I doe give and bequeath unto my saide sonne Tho:
whome I make my full and onlie Executor of this my last will and Testament, And I do
desyer my Brother Mr Paule Orpwood Mr Robert Mayott, Mr ffraunc's Litle Mr Anthony
Tersdall Mr James Hyde, and my sonne John Chaundler, to be my Overseers of this my
last will and Testament; In witnes wherof I have hereunto put my hande and seale the
