Died (Anthony Wood says) 2 Jan 1683/84 at his house "near New Inn" aged about 84, and buried 5 Jan at St Peter le Bailey.

  • I revoke all former wills.
  • I give all my messuages, lands, closes, meadows, pastures, tenements etc in Kersly in the County of the City of Coventry [ie WAR] to my loving son John Poynter Jr and his heirs etc forever.
    I also give him my close called Butt Close with all its ways. profits etc in WAR Arlescote, now in the occupation of Richard Burrows, gent.
  • I give all my messuages, lands, closes, meadows, pastures, tenements etc in Hailey (whether freehold, copyhold or customary) to my loving son Theophilus Pointer and his heirs etc forever.
    I also give him my close called Bean Close with all its ways, profits etc in WAR Arlescote, now in the occupation of Richard Burrows.
    I also give him £100.
  • I give all my messuages, closes, lands, tenements etc in WAR Packwood to my loving son Timothy Poynter and his heirs etc forever.
    I also give him my meadow called Gurner? Meadow with all its ways, profits etc in WAR Arlescote, now in the occupation of Richard Burrows.
  • I give my daughter Johanna Farrall my great silver saltcellar, my little gilded saltcellar and her mother's two gold rings.
    I also give her £10, to be paid into her own hands exclusive of her husband, her receipt being a sufficient discharge.
    I give my little silver tankard to my loving son Farrall, and to their children all my eight old silver spoons and one gilt spoon equally between them.
  • I give all my linen and bedding, coverlets and cushions equally divided between my loving daughters-in-law, the wives of John Poynter Jr and Theophilus Poynter, and to my son Timothy Poynter, leaving it to them to give whatever of it they please to any of their children.
  • I give 40s to the godly and civil poor in Oxford or in the parish where I die, to be distributed as my Executors think fit.
  • I give all my books and manuscripts of divinity to my three sons equally divided between them.
  • My debts, legacies and funeral expenses being first paid, I give all the residue of my plate monies, bonds, bills, debts, household stuff, goods and chattels to my three sons equally divided, and appoint them my Executors.
  • "I do beseech all my sons upon my knees by all the endearing mercies of God and merits of Jesus Christ to fear and obey God and keep his Sabbaths and go to hear his word preached and sacraments administered constantly and read the sacred Scripture and pray in their families morning and evening and likewise by themselves morning and evening and labour to be rooted and built up in Jesus Christ and to live in Charity and to counsel poor Timothy my loving and afflicted son to help him."

In the Name of God, Amen
I John Poynter the elder of the University of Oxford Minister of God's word being
(praised be God) in health and good understanding doe on this Twenty first day of
September in the yeare of our Lord One Thousand six hundred eighty and three
make declare and publish this my last will and Testament in writing in manner
and forme following (that is to say) Item I hereby revoke and disanull all
former and other last wills and Testaments by mee made and as to my faith I doe
beleeve all the Articles of the Apostles Creed and am assured that God hath
accepted mee, and my faith repentance prayers desires and endeavours in and for
Christ and for his sake hath forgiven all my sinnes and will save mee from everlasting
death for his meritts sake, and for my funerall I leave it to my Executors to give
mee a decent funerall and concerning my estate which God in his mercy hath
bestowed on mee. Item I give and bequeath all and every my Messuages lands
Closes meadowes pastures Tenements and hereditaments whatsoever with
their and every of their appurtenances situate lyeing and being in the parish of
Towne of Kersly in the County of the Citty of Coventry unto my Loveing sonne
John Poynter the younger and unto his heires and assignes forever. Item I give and
devise all and every my Messuages Lands Closes meadowes pastures tenements and
hereditaments whatsoever with their Appurtenances either free Coppyhold or
Customary or of what kind or nature soever the same or any of them be situate
lyeing and being in Haley in the County of Oxford unto my Loveing sonne
Theophilus Pointer and to his heires and assignes for ever. Item I give and bequeath
All that my Meadow called Gurner [?] meadow with all wayes profitts and appurtenances
to the same belonging or appertaining situate lyeing and being in the parish or Towne
of Orliscott alias Arliscot in the County of Warwick now in the possession or occupation

of Richard Burrows Gent or his assigns to my Loveing sonne Timothy Poynter and unto
his heires and assignes forever. Item I give and bequeath all that my Close called Bean
Close withall wayes profitts and appurtenances to the same belonging or appertaining
situate lyeing and being in the parish or Towne of Orliscott alias Arliscot aforesaid
in the said county of Warwick now in the possession or occupation of the said
Richard Burrows or his assignes to my said sonne

Loveing sonne Farrall my little silver tankard and to my daughter Johanna his
wife my greate Silver Saltseller and my little Saltseller gilded and her mother's
two gold rings. Item I give to the Children of my said daughter Johanna all my
eight old silver spoones and one gilt spoone equally to bee divided amongst them.
Item I also give to my said Daughter Johanna Farrall Tenn pounds in mony to be
at her owne dispose. and to be paid into her owne hands exclusive of her said husband and
that her sole acquittance shall be a sufficient discharge unto my Executors for the paym't
of the same unto her. Item I give unto my Loveing Daughters in Law the wives of
the said John Poynter the younger and Theophilus Poynter and to my said sonne
Timothy Poynter All my linnen and bedding coverletts and cushions whatsoever
equally to be divided betweene them leaveing it to them to give what parts thereof they
shall please to any of their Children. Item I give to the godly and civill poore in Oxford
or in the parish where I shall dye forty shllings to be distributed as my Executors shall
thinke fitt. Item I give all my Books and Manuscripts of Divinity whatsoever to my
said sonnes John Poynter the younger Theophilus and Timothy Poynter equally to
be divided amongst them. Item I also give to my said sonne Theophilus Pointer the
summe of One hundred pounds of lawfull money of England. Item all the rest and
residue of my plate monies Bonds Bills Debts household stuffe goods and chattells
whatsoever not hereby before bequeathed my debts legacies and funerall expenses being
first satisfied and discharged I give and bequeath to my said sonns John Poynter
the younger Theophilus Poynter and Timothy Poynter equally to be divided between
them. Item I hereby make and appoint my said sonns John Pointer the younger Theophilus
Pointer and Timothy Poynter the full and whole Executors of this my last will and testam't.
And I doe beseech all my said sonns upon my knees by all the endearing mercies of God
and merits of Jesus Christ to feare and obey God and keep his Sabbaths and goe to
heare his word preached and sacraments administered constantly and read the sacred
Scripture and pray in their families Morning and Evening and like wise by themselves
morning and evening and labour to bee rooted and built up in Jesus Christ and to
live in Charity and to Counsell poore Timothy my loveing and afflicted sonne to helpe
him. In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale on the day and year
first above written. John Pointer. Septemb. 26th 1683 the within named John Pointer
the elder did seale publish signe and declare this present parchment writing to bee
his last will and testament in the presence of us Witnesses Tho: Smith William
Philipson Jeremy Baxter.
