The meaning is not always clear. The copy-clerk had the same problem, and twice resorted to "orig'l so", the equivalent of a clerkish shrug :-)
An affidavit was required because the alterations were not described in the Attestation, and perhaps also because he never actually used the word "Executors", though his intention was obvious.
He goes on about "my beloved wife", but never gives her name.
Some of the daughters (maybe all but Ann) are married, but only Martha's surname can be deduced.

  • I give my copyhold and freehold estate, all my personal property (except my household goods), corn, grain and hay, live and dead farming stock, implements in husbandry etc and all my other effects to my son Richard and my sons-in-law Job Lousley and Robert Edward Barber In Trust so that they may let or carry on my farming business:
    • To apply the profits etc first to paying my debts as far as possible and the remainder to paying the interest of the residue [see Note] and to the maintenance of my wife.
    • If they decide to let the farm, the stock is to be applied to the payment of my debts and the rentals to the payment of the interest of the residue and the maintenance of my wife.
  • My daughter Ann is to be allowed to live with my wife while she remains single.
  • I give my beloved wife the use of all my household goods for life, and after her decease my Trustees are to divide them equally among all my children.
  • After my wife's decease my Trustees are to sell my estate:
    • My son is to have first refusal, then the other members of the family, eldest first.
    • If one of the Trustees wishes to buy it, the signatures of the other Trustees with the rest of my living children will be a sufficient title.
    • If they all refuse, they may sell to any person whom they think fit.
    • After paying my debts and their own expenses, the residue of the proceeds is to be divided into seven equal portions and distributed (within two months after my wife's decease) as follows:
      • One portion to Mary Ann.
      • One portion to Ruth.
      • One portion to Ann.
      • One portion to Eliza.
      • One portion to Richard.
      • One portion to Jane.
      • One portion to be invested and the interest paid half-yearly to my daughter Martha and her husband, and after the death of the survivor her portion is to be divided equally between Martha's children Henry Robinson, Elizabeth Wernham, Emma Wernham and Aurthur Wernham.

Appeared Personally Daniel Lousley of Blewbury, farmer, and swore:
  • That he is one of the witnesses to the annexed will of William Robinson of Blewbury, farmer, dated 22 Jan 1843.
  • That on that day the Testator duly executed his will by making his mark at the end in the presence of this deponent and of Edward Humphrey and Gad Lousley, the other witnesses.
  • That this deponent, Edward Humfrey and Gad Lousley then signed the will in the presence of the Testator and of each other.
  • That he had prepared the will, and that [list of alterations] were made before it was executed.
  • That having carefully viewed the will, he swears that it is in all respects in the same condition as when executed.
  • Sworn at BRK East Ilsley before me Thomas Loveday Surrogate.

This is the last Will
and Testament of William
Robinson of Blewberry Berks
made this twenty second day of January 1843
as follows viz't I Give and bequeath unto my
Son Richard my Sons in Law Job Lousley
and Robert Edward Barber all my personal
property (except my Household Goods) my estate
Copyhold and Freehold and all my other
effects of what nature or kind soever and
wheresoever situate Corn Grain & Hay Live
& dead Farming Stock Implements in Husbandry &c &c
In trust for the following uses and purposes
viz't That they shall be empowered to let or
and carry on my Farming Business and
apply the rents & profits first to paying the
interest off my just debts as far as possible ["Orig'l so"]
the remainder to paying the interest of the
residue and to the maintainance of my
beloved Wife and if they shall determine
to let the Farm, the Stock shall be
applied to the payment of my debts and
the rentals to the payment of the interest
of the residue and the maintainance of my
beloved Wife And my Will is that my
Daughter Ann shall have a residence with
my beloved Wife so long as she remains
single I Give and bequeath unto my beloved
Wife the use of all my Household Goods
during her life at and immediately after
her decease I desire my Trustees to divide
the same share & share alike among all
my Children my Will is that my Trustees
shall immediately after my Wife's decease dispose
of my Estate by Public Auction or Private ["Orig'l so"]
Sale and that the first offer shall be given
to my Family and should either of the
Trustees desire to purchase the same the signature

of the other Trustees with the rest of my Children
living shall be deemed a sufficient Title and
my Son shall have the first offer and then if
he refuses the other Branches of the Family to
have the offer begining at the eldest to the
youngest if all refuses then I empower them
to sell to any person who they shall think
fit after paying out of the same all my
debts and the expences which may arise my
Will is the residue of the said money shall be
by them divided into seven equal portions and
shall within two months after the decease of
my beloved Wife be distributed by them in
the following manner as tenants in common
one portion to Mary Ann one portion to Ruth
one portion to Ann one portion to Eliza one
portion to Richard one portion to Jane and
one portion to be invested in Goverment or
other securities the interest of the same to be
paid half yearly to my Daughter Martha &
her Husband or the survivor of them at and
Immediately after the death of my Daughter
Martha and her Husband I do desire that
her portion or share shall be by my Trustees
divided equaly between my Daughter Martha's
Children share and share alike viz Henry
Robinson Elizabeth Wernham Emma Wernham
& Aurthur Wernham In Witness whereof I

And made Oath that he is one of the
subscribed Witnesses to the last Will and Testament
of William Robinson late of Blewberry aforesaid
Farmer deceased bearing date the twenty second
day of January one thousand eight hundred
and forty three now hereunto annexed And
he further made Oath that on the said
twenty second day of January one thousand
eight hundred and forty three the said Testator
duly executed his said Will by affixing his
mark at the foot or end thereof in the
presence of this Deponent and of Edward
Humphrey and Gad Lousley the other
subscribed Witnesses thereto who were then
together present at the same time with the
said deceased And this Deponent and the
said Edward Humfrey and Gad Lousley
thereupon attested and subscribed the said
Will in the presence of the said Testator and
of each other And he also made Oath that
he this Deponent prepared the said Will of
the said William Robinson and that previous
to the execution of the same by the said
Testator the erazure with a Pen of the words
"the interest" now appearing in the eighteenth
line from the top of the last first page of the
said Will and the interlineation of the word
"Wife" now appearing between the Tenth and
eleventh lines from the top of the second
page of the said Will and also the erazure
with a Pen of the words "set my hand"
now appearing in the twenty second line
from the top of the third page of the
said Will and superscription in the stead
thereof of the words "made my cross" were
severally first made And this Deponent having
now carefully viewed and perused the said
Will further made Oath that the same is

in all respects in the same plight and condition
as when executed by the said William Robinson
deceased Dan'l Lousley Sworn at East
Ilsley in the County of Berks the day and
year first above written Before me Thomas

This Will was Proved at Oxford on the fifth day of July
in the year of our Lord 1843 Before The Reverend Thomas
Loveday Clerk MA Surrogate of The Reverend Richard
Francis Onslow Clerk MA Official Principal of The Venerable
the Archdeacon of the Archdeaconry of Berks lawfully constituted
by the Oaths of Richard Robinson Job Lousley and Robert
Edward Barber the Executors according to the Tenor therein named to whom Admon
was granted being first Sworn duly to Administer
