  • I give my recently-built messuage at Little Tew with its outbuildings, garden etc (now occupied by Richard Massey) to my cousin John Ryman of Great Tew, baker (son of John and Sarah Ryman), for life.
    After his decease I give [the property] to his wife Louisa Ryman (if she outlives him) for life.
    After the decease of the survivor of John and Louisa, I give [the property] to my first cousin Robert Ryman of Fifield and his heirs etc forever.
  • I give my other new messuage at Little Tew adjoining that above with its outbuildings, garden etc (now occupied by William Wood) to my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle for life,
    After her decease I give [the second property] to Robert Ryman of Fifield and his heirs etc forever.
  • I give my silver teapot to my second cousin Mrs Mary Sarah Hicks of Banbury.
  • I give to my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle all my books, pictures and ornaments of household, my marble timepiece, my plated candlesticks (given to me by Mr Boulton), also the bedstead, bed, mattress, bolster, pillows, blankets and all other furniture in the bedroom where she now sleeps and has slept since the death of my sister.
  • My housekeeper Elizabeth Castle is to be permitted to reside in my present house for six months after my decease, and during that time is to have the services of my servant Elizabeth Hooper.
    During that period the rent and taxes of my house, the wages of Elizabeth Castle and Elizabeth Hooper at their present rates. and their maintenance and support, are to be paid out of my personal estate.
  • I give the rest of my household goods and furniture, plate, linen, china, money and securities for money, book and other debts, shares in any public company and all the residue of my personal estate and effects to George Bloomfield Smith of Chipping Norton, stationer, and Thomas Coles of Chipping Norton, corn dealer, and their executors etc Upon Trust [to liquidate] and with the proceeds:
    • First pay my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses.
    • Pay each of themselves £30 free of Legacy Duty for their trouble.
    • Invest £3000 (with power to alter securities) for the following purposes:
      • Out of the interest etc expend £5 pa yearly forever on the insurance, repairs or improvement of the premises in Little Tew which I have settled for the benefit of the current Minister of the Baptists who meet for worship at the chapel at Little Tew.
      • Pay the residue of the interest etc to that Minister, provided that once every Sunday (unless prevented by illness etc) he also conducts a religious service and preaches at Cleveley, and also provided that he has been chosen by the majority of the communicants connected with the chapel and while he continues to act as Minister with their consent.
        Otherwise my Trustees may at their discretion apply the interest etc as they think best in aid of the public worship of God by the Baptists assembling for worship at Little Tew and Cleveley.
    • Invest enough money to raise £30 pa clear of all deductions:
      • Pay the interest etc to my cousin John Ryman of Great Tew for life.
      • After his decease, if his wife Louisa Ryman is living, pay the interest etc to her for life.
      • After the decease of the survivor of John and Louisa Ryman I give the money so invested to be divided equally between the Treasurer of the Orphanage at SRY Stockwell founded by Mr Spurgeon, and the Treasurer of the Establishment for Orphans at Ashleydown, Bristol, founded by Mr Müller, for the purposes of those Orphanages.
    • Invest enough money to raise another £30 pa clear of all deductions:
      • Pay the interest etc to my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle for life.
      • After her decease I give the money so invested to the Treasurer of the Aged Pilgrims Friend Society in London, for the purposes of the Society.
    • Invest enough money to raise another £20 clear of all deductions.
      • Pay the interest etc to William Nelson of Great Tew, butcher, for life.
      • After his decease I give the money so invested to be divided equally between the Treasurer of the British Home for Incurables at SRY Clapham and the Treasurer of Doctor Barnardos Village Homes, for the purposes of those charities.
    • The following legacies are to be paid at the end of six months after my decease, free from Legacy Duty:
      • I give my cousin John Ryman £300.
        If he predeceases me and his wife Louisa Ryman is living, I give the £300 to her.
      • I give my second cousin Mary Sarah Hicks, wife of Joseph Hicks of Banbury, £400.
      • I give Ann Reading (daughter of my first cousin John Robins of Great Barford) £200.
      • I give my first cousin George Robins of SRY Battersea £50.
      • I give Fanny Dybald Smith, widow of my first cousin John Smith, £200.
      • I give £100 equally divided between those of the children of my late cousin William Archer as are living in England at the time of my decease.
      • I give William Nelson of Great Tew, butcher, £100.
      • I give my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle £100 in addition to the above annuity.
      • I give my second cousin George John Robins of Banbury £300.
      • I give my cousin Elizabeth Cook, wife of James Cook of Great Tew, mason, £50.
      • I give my above cousin Robert Ryman £50.
        If he predeceases me I give the £50 to his wife if she is then living.
      • I give Ann Hine of GLS Chipping Campden, wife of William Hine, plumber and glazier, £50.
        If she predeceases me, I give the £50 to her husband William Hine if he is then living.
      • I give James Clark, husband of my late cousin Elizabeth Clark (daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Ryman) £20.
        If he predeceases me, I give the £20 equally between those of his sons who are then living.
      • I give my cousin Mary Hunt, widow of Joseph Hunt of Great Rollright, £20.
      • I give Elizabeth Nelson of Great Tew, spinster, (daughter of the late John Nelson of Great Tew, mason) £20.
      • I give to Mary Elizabeth Lowe of No 12 Museum Villas Oxford, domestic servant, and to Elizabeth Hooper now residing with me as domestic servant, £10 each.
    • The legacies given for charitable or religious purposes are to be paid only out of that part of my personal estate as may lawfully be used for such purposes
      • I give the Treasurer of the Pastors College connected with Mr Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle, SRY Newington, £200 for the purposes of the College
      • I give the Treasurer of the above Orphanage at SRY Stockwell founded by Mr Spurgeon £200 for the purposes of the Orphanage.
      • I give the Treasurer of the above Establishment for Orphans at Ashley-down, Bristol founded by Mr Müller £200 for the purposes of the Establishment.
      • I give the Treasurer of the above Aged Pilgrims Friend Society in London £200 for the purposes of the Society.
      • I give the Treasurer of the Baptist Foreign Missionary Society in London £300 for the purposes of the Society.
    • I give all the residue of the trust monies and of my personal estate and effects, and any legacies which may fail due to the deaths of the legatees or from any other cause, to my second cousin Mary Sarah Hicks.
    • If my personal estate is insufficient to provide for all the above investments or legacies, my Trustees are to prioritise them as follows:
      • First the £3000 for the Baptists (out of the "charitable and religious purposes" part of my estate)
      • Then all the investments and legacies for my relations and other persons (not "charitable and religious purposes").
      • Then the £200 legacies to Pastors College, the Orphanage at Stockwell and the Orphanage at Ashleydown Bristol (charitable)
      • Then the £200 legacy to the Aged Pilgrims Friend Society (charitable).
      • My other "charitable" investments and legacies are to be proportionately reduced to cover the insufficiency.
  • I appoint George Bloomfield Smith and Thomas Coles as Executors.

Codicil 4 Feb 1889
  • Whereas I have appointed Thomas Coles as a Trustee and Executor, and have given him £30 for his trouble.
  • Now I revoke his appointment and the £30 legacy.
  • I appoint Richard Waite Hodges of Tracey Farm, Great Tew, farmer, as a Trustee and Executor in place of Thomas Coles, and give him £30 for his trouble, and declare that my Will is to take effect as if the name of Richard Waite Hodges were inserted throughout instead of the name of Thomas Coles.
  • In all other respects I confirm my Will.

This is the last Will and Testament
of me
Robert Ryman of Great Tew in the County of Oxford Gentleman I give and devise the messuage
or tenement lately built by me situate and being at Little Tew in the County of Oxford with the outbuildings
garden and appurtenances thereunto belonging now in the occupation of Richard Massey unto my cousin John
Ryman of Great Tew aforesaid Baker (son of John and Sarah Ryman) for and during the term of his
natural life And from and immediately after his decease I give and devise the same messuage or
tenement with the outbuildings garden and appurtenances unto Louisa Ryman the wife of the said John
Ryman if she shall survive him for and during the term of her natural life And from and immediately
after the decease of the survivor of them the said John Ryman and Louisa his wife I give and devise the
same messuage or tenement with the outbuildings garden and appurtenances unto and to the use of my
first cousin Robert Ryman of Fifield in the County of Oxford his heirs and assigns for ever I give and
devise the messuage or tenement also lately built by me situate and being at Little Tew aforesaid (adjoining
the said messuage or tenement hereinbefore devised) with the outbuildings garden and appurtenances thereunto
belonging now in the occupation of William Wood unto my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle for and during
the term of her natural life And from and immediately after her decease I give and devise the said last
mentioned messuage or tenement with the outbuildings garden and appurtenances (in the occupation of
William Wood) unto and to the use of the said Robert Ryman (of Fifield) his heirs and assigns for ever
I give and bequeath my silver Teapot to my second cousin Mrs Mary Sarah Hicks of Banbury.
I give and bequeath to my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle (hereinbefore named) All my books pictures and
ornaments of household my marble timepiece my plated candlesticks (given to me by Mr Boulton) and also
the bedstead bed mattress bolster pillows blankets and all other the furniture which may at the time of
my decease be in the bedroom in which my said housekeeper now sleeps and has slept since the
death of my sister. It is my Will and desire that my said Housekeeper Elizabeth Castle be permitted
to reside in my present dwelling house for six calendar months next after my decease and during that
time to have the services of my servant Elizabeth Hooper And I direct that during the same period
the rent and taxes of my said dwelling house and the wages of the said Elizabeth Castle and Elizabeth Hooper
at their present rates and their maintenance and their maintenance and support shall be paid
by and out of my personal estate I give and bequeath all the residue of my househould goods and
furniture plate linen and china and all my monies and securities for money book and other debts or
shares in any public company (being personal estate) and all the rest and residue of my personal
estate and effects of every sort and kind unto George Bloomfield Smith of Chipping Norton in the County of
Oxford Stationer and Thomas Coles of Chipping Norton aforesaid Corn Dealer their executors administrators
and assigns Upon trust that they the said George Bloomfield Smith and Thomas Coles or the survivor of
them or the executors administrators or assigns of such survivor or other the Trustees or Trustee for the
time being of this my Will hereinafter called “the Trustees or Trustee” do and shall sell and dispose of the said
residue of my household goods and furniture plate linen and china and such other parts of the said
residue of my personal estate and effects as shall not consist of monies or securities for money and collect
and get in my monies debts and securities for money and after payment thereout of my just debts funeral
and testamentary expenses do and shall retain and pay unto each of themselves the said George Bloomfield
Smith and Thomas Coles the sum of Thirty pounds free of Legacy Duty in consideration of the trouble they may
have respectively in the execution of this my Will And then do and shall stand possessed of the residue
of the monies which shall arise from such sales and collection as aforesaid Upon the trusts and to and
for the ends and purposes hereinafter mentioned expressed or declared of and concerning the same that
is to say Upon trust that the Trustees or Trustee do and shall lay out and invest the sum of Three thousand
pounds in or upon any of the public stocks or funds of Great Britain or upon Government Security
with power from time to time to alter vary and transpose such last mentioned stocks funds or securities for
or into other stocks funds or securities of a like nature at discretion And do and shall from time to time
for ever thereafter by and out of the interest dividends and annual proceeds of the said last mentioned trust
monies stocks funds and securities lay out and expend yearly the sum of Five pounds in or about the
insurance repairs or improvement of the message [sic] or tenement and premises in Little Tew aforesaid which
have been settled and assured by me for the benefit of the recognised Minister or Pastor for the time being
of the Protestant Dissenters of the Baptist Denomination within the United Kingdom of Great Britain
and Ireland meeting for worship at the chapel or meeting house at Little Tew aforesaid and do and
shall pay the residue of such interest dividends and annual proceeds unto the said recognised
Minister or Pastor for the time being of the said Protestant Dissenters of the Baptist Denomination
meeting for worship at the said Chapel or Meeting House at Little Tew aforesaid provided such Minster
or Pastor shall also once on every Sabbath Day (unless prevented by illness or other unavoidable cause)
conduct a religious service and preach at Cleveley in the County of Oxford and provided also that such
Minister or Pastor shall have been chosen by the majority of the Church Members and communicants of and
connected with the said Chapel or Meeting House and during such time only as he shall continue to act
as such Minister or Pastor with the consent and approbation of the majority of such members and communicants
or otherwise the Trustees or Trustee do and shall at their or his discretion pay and apply the same interest
dividends and annual proceeds in such manner as they or he shall think best in aid of the Public
Worship of God by the Society or congregation of Baptists assembling for worship at Little Tew and
Cleveley aforesaid And I do declare that the Trustees or Trustee shall stand possessed of the whole
of the residue of the said monies as collected and called in as aforesaid In trust for the several objects
purposes and persons to or for which or whom the same are hereinafter given or bequeathed that is to say:
I direct the Trustees or Trustee immediately or as soon as may be after my decease to lay out and invest
by and out of the aforesaid trust monies in or upon such stocks funds or securities as are lastly
hereinbefore mentioned (with the like power to alter vary and transpose such last mentioned stocks funds
or securities as is also lastly hereinbefore mentioned) such a sum or sums of money as will at the time

of such Investment be sufficient to realize the annual sum of Thirty pounds clear of all deductions And
I direct the Trustees or Trustee to pay the interest dividends and annual proceeds of such last mentioned
stocks funds or securities unto my cousin John Ryman of Great Tew aforesaid for and during his life And from
and immediately after his decease if Louisa Ryman the wife of the said John Ryman shall be then living
I direct the Trustees or Trustee to pay the interest dividends and annual proceeds of such last mentioned
stocks funds or securities unto the said Louisa Ryman for and during her life And from and after the
decease of the survivor of them the said John Ryman and Louisa Ryman Then I give and bequeath
the sum or sums of money so invested as last aforesaid unto and to be divided unto and equally between
the Treasurer for the time being of the Orphanage at Stockwell in the County of Surrey founded by Mr
Spurgeon and the Treasurer for the time being of the Establishment for Orphans at Ashley down Bristol

Aged Pilgrims Friend Society established in London for the purposes of the last mentioned Society
in addition to what I have hereinafter given to the said Society And I direct the Trustees or
Trustee immediately or as soon as may be after my decease to lay out and invest by and out of the
aforesaid trust monies in or upon any of the public stocks or funds of Great Britain or upon
Government securities (with power to alter vary and transpose such last mentioned stocks funds
or securities for or into other stocks funds or securities of a like nature of discretion) such a sum
or sums of money as will at the time of such investment be sufficient to realize the further annual
sum of Twenty pounds clear of all deductions And I direct the Trustees or Trustee to pay the
interest dividends and annual proceeds of such last mentioned stocks funds or securities unto William
Nelson of Great Tew aforesaid Butcher for and during his life And from and immediately after
his decease I give and bequeath the sum or sums of money so invested as last aforesaid unto and
to be divided equally between the Treasurer for the time being of the British Home for Incurables
established at Clapham in the County of Surrey and the Treasurer for the time being of the
establishment called Doctor Barnardos Village Homes respectively for the purposes of the said British
Home and Village Homes respectively I give and bequeath unto my cousin John Ryman hereinbefore
named the sum of Three hundred pounds sterling to be paid to the said John Ryman free from

Legacy Duty But if the said John Ryman shall not be living at the time of my decease and his
wife Louisa Ryman shall be then living Then I give the said last mentioned Legacy of Three hundred
pounds to the said Louisa Ryman free from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath to my second cousin the
said Mary Sarah Hicks the Wife of Joseph Hicks of Banbury in the County of Oxford the sum of Four
hundred pounds sterling Free from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath unto Ann Reading (Daughter of
my first cousin John Robins of Great Barford in the County of Oxford) the sum of Two hundred pounds
sterling to be paid to the said Ann Reading free from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath unto my first
cousin George Robins of Battersea in the County of Surrey the sum of Fifty pounds free from Legacy Duty
And I give and bequeath unto Fanny Dybald Smith the Widow of my late first cousin John Smith the
sum of Two hundred pounds sterling to be paid to the said Fanny Dybald Smith free from legacy Duty
I give and bequeath the sum of One hundred pounds sterling free from Legacy Duty unto and to be
equally divided between and amongst such and as many of the children of my late cousin William
Archer as shall be living in England at the time of my decease share and share alike I give and
bequeath unto the before named William Nelson of Great Tew aforesaid Butcher the sum of One hundred
pounds sterling to be paid to the said William Nelson free from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath
unto my housekeeper Elizabeth Castle hereinbefore named the sum of One hundred pounds sterling (in
addition to the annuity or annual sum hereinbefore mentioned) to be paid to the said Elizabeth Castle free
from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath to my second cousin George John Robins of Banbury the
sum of Three hundred pounds sterling free from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath unto my
cousin Elizabeth Cook the wife of James Cook of Great Tew aforesaid Mason the sum of Fifty pounds
free from Legacy Duty And I give and bequeath to my cousin Robert Ryman hereinbefore named
the sum of Fifty pounds free from Legacy Duty But if the said Robert Ryman shall not be living
at the time of my decease Then I give the last mentioned Legacy of Fifty pounds to his wife if she
shall be then living free from Legacy Duty And to Ann Hine of Chipping Campden in the County of
Gloucester (Wife of William Hine Plumber and Glazier) the sum of Fifty pounds free from Legacy Duty
But if the said Ann Hine shall not be living at the time of my decease Then I give the last
mentioned Legacy of Fifty pounds to her husband William Hine if he shall be then living free from
Legacy Duty I give and bequeath unto James Clark husband of my late cousin Elizabeth
Clark (daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Ryman) the sum of Twenty pounds sterling free from
Legacy Duty But if the said James Clark shall not be living at the time of my decease Then I
give the said last mentioned Legacy of Twenty pounds sterling free from Legacy Duty to the sons of
the said James Clark who shall be then living equally amongst them if more than one and if
there shall be but one such son then the whole to such only son And I give and bequeath to
my cousin Mary Hunt the widow of Joseph Hunt of Great Rollright in the County of Oxford the
sum of Twenty pounds free from Legacy Duty And to Elizabeth Nelson of Great Tew aforesaid
Spinster (daughter of the late John Nelson of the same place Mason) the sum of Twenty pounds

free from Legacy Duty And I give and bequeath to Mary Elizabeth Lowe of No 12 Museum
Villas Oxford Domestic Servant and to Elizabeth Hooper now residing with me as Domestic Servant
the sum of Ten pounds each free from Legacy Duty I give and bequeath to the Treasurer for
the time being of the Pastors College connected with Mr Spurgeons Metropolitan Tabernacle Newington
Surrey the sum of Two hundred pounds sterling for the purposes of the said College I give and
bequeath to the Treasurer for the time being of the Orphanage at Stockwell in the Country of Surrey
founded by Mr Spurgeon (hereinbefore mentioned) the sum of Two hundred pounds sterling for the
purposes of the said Orphanage I give and bequeath to the Treasurer for the time being of
the Establishment for Orphans at Ashley-down Bristol founded by Mr Müller (hereinbefore mentioned) the sum of
Two hundred pounds sterling for the purposes of the said Establishment I give and bequeath to
the Treasurer for the time being of the Aged Pilgrims Friend Society established in London hereinbefore
mentioned the sum of Two hundred pounds sterling for the purposes of the said last mentioned Society
I give and bequeath to the Treasurer for the time being of the Baptist Foreign Missionary
Society established in London the sum of Three hundred pounds sterling for the purposes of the
said last mentioned Society And I declare that the receipt or receipts of the Treasurer or Treasurers
for the time being of the several and respective Societies or Institutions Unions Orphanages Home or
Homes to or in favor of which the several and respective charitable or religious bequests or Legacies hereinbefore
are given and bequeathed shall be good and sufficient discharges for the said several and respective
bequests or Legacies to my Executors or other the person or persons paying the same. And I direct
that the several specific pecuniary Legacies bequeathed by this my Will (other than such as are
bequeathed for charitable or religious purposes) shall be paid at the expiration of Six calendar
months from the time of my decease I give and bequeath all the residue of the said trust monies
so to be collected and called in as aforesaid and of my personal estate and effects if any not
hereinbefore absolutely disposed of And also any Legacies or bequests which may become lapsed or
otherwise fail by reason of the deaths of the Legatees or from any other cause unto my second cousin
Mary Sarah Hicks hereinbefore named Provided always and it is my Will and I declare that
notwithstanding anything hereinbefore contained to the contrary the several bequests or Legacies hereinbefore
by me given for charitable or religious purposes shall be paid exclusively out of such part of my
personal estate as may lawfully be appropriated to such purposes And in case my personal estate
shall not be sufficient to answer and provide for the several Investments bequests or Legacies
hereinbefore by me given Then and in such case I direct and declare that the Trustees or Trustee shall
give priority to the Investments bequests and legacies in the order hereinafter mentioned that is
to say I direct and declare that the Trustees or Trustee shall lay out and invest the said sum of
Three thousand pounds for the purposes hereinafter [sic] directed of and concerning the same out of such
part of my estate as may lawfully be appropriated to such purpose And then the Trustees or Trustee
shall lay out and invest all sums hereinbefore directed to be invested and pay all Legacies hereinbefore

bequeathed to my relations and other persons (and not directed to be invested or bequeathed for charitable
and religious purposes) And then the Trustees or Trustee shall out of such part of my estate as may lawfully
be appropriated to such purpose pay the said several Legacies of Two hundred pounds each hereinbefore
bequeathed to the Pastors College the Orphanage at Stockwell aforesaid and the Orphanage at Ashley
down Bristol aforesaid. And then the Trustees or Trustee shall pay the said Legacy of Two hundred pounds
hereinbefore bequeathed to the said Aged Pilgrims Friend Society And I direct and declare that the other
or several other investment or investments bequest or bequests and Legacy or Legacies hereinbefore by
me given for charitable or religious purposes as aforesaid and which are not hereinbefore particularly
mentioned in this present proviso shall abate proportionately to the several amounts thereof in case
such part of my personal estate which may lawfully be appropriated for such purposes shall
not be sufficient to answer and provide for payment thereof in full And I appoint
the said George Bloomfield Smith and Thomas Coles Executors of this my Will. In Witness whereof
I the said Robert Ryman the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament contained in seven sheets
of paper to each sheet thereof set my hand the seventh day of October One thousand eight hundred and eighty seven

This is a Codicil to the last Will and Testament of
me Robert Ryman of Great Tew in the County
of Oxford Gentleman which Will bears date the seventh day of October One thousand eight hundred and eighty
seven Whereas by my said Will I have appointed Thomas Coles to be one of the Trustees and Executors
thereof and I have given him a Legacy of Thirty pounds for his trouble in acting as such Trustee
and Executor Now I hereby revoke the appointment of the said Thomas Coles as such Trustee and
Executor and also the said Legacy of Thirty pounds given to me [sic] as aforesaid And I appoint
Richard Waite Hodges of Tracey Farm in the Parish of Great Tew aforesaid Farmer to be a Trustee
and Executor of my said Will in the place of the said Thomas Coles And I give to the said
Richard Waite Hodges a Legacy of Thirty pounds for his trouble in acting as such Trustee and
Executor And I declare that my said Will shall be construed and take effect as if the name

of the said Richard Waite Hodges were inserted in my said Will throughout instead of the name of the
said Thomas Coles And in all other respects I confirm my said Will In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand this fourth day of February One thousand eight hundred and eighty nine.
