  • I give my several pieces of arable land, meadow and pasture ground in the common fields of Chipping Norton, commonly called a half yard land and now in her own possession, to my mother Elizabeth Shortland of Chipping Norton, widow, for life.
    After her decease I give to my nephew Thomas Gilkes of Chipping Norton, glazier and plumber, and his heirs etc forever, In Trust to sell and with the proceeds:
    • Make up any deficiency in my personal estate for paying my debts, legacies and funeral expenses.
    • If any surplus remains, divide it equally amongst my brother and sisters Thomas Shortland; Elizabeth (wife of William Margets of GLS Sherborne, wheelwright); Mary Gilkes of Chipping Norton, widow; Sarah (wife of James Wain of Langford, wheelwright); Dorothy (wife of Thomas Insal of Chipping Norton, innholder); Ann (wife of Harvey Wheeler of Banbury, peruke maker); and Hannah Shortland.
  • I also give one guinea apiece to Thomas Gilkes and to my kinswomen Elizabeth Gilkes, Elizabeth Buckett, Hannah Insal, Anne Insal and Mrs Sarah Timms of Over Norton, spinster, to be paid within six months after my decease.
  • I give all the residue of my ready money, goods, chattels and personal estate, after payment of my debts, legacies and funeral expenses, to my nephew Thomas Gilkes In Trust:
    • To invest it and pay the interest to my mother Elizabeth Shortland for life.
    • After her decease to divide it amongst my above brother and sisters.

In the Name of God Amen I Richard Shortland of Chippingnorton in the
County of Oxford Glazier being of sound and disposing Mind Memory and Understanding
Do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following (that
is to say) Principally I Commend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God my Creator
hoping through the Merits and Intercession of my Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ
to receive Pardon of all my sins and my Body I Commit to the Earth to be decently
buried at the Discretion of my Executor hereinafter named and as to what worldly
Estate it hath pleased God to bless me withal I give devise and bequeath the same as
followeth First I give and devise unto my mother Elizabeth Shortland of Chipping
Norton aforesaid Widow All those my several Pieces and Parcels of arable
Land meadow and pasture Ground with the Appurtenances lying and being
within the Common Fields Liberties and Precincts of Chippingnorton commonly called
a Half Yard Land now in the Possession of my said mother Elizabeth Shortland
To Hold the same unto the said Elizabeth Shortland and her
Assigns for and during the term of her natural Life And from and immediately
after her Decease I Give and devise my said Half Yard Land with the
Appurtenances unto my Nephew Thomas Gilkes of Chippingnorton aforesaid
Glazier and Plumber his heirs and Assigns forever In Trust that he
the said Thomas Gilkes or his Heirs do and shall as soon as Conveniently may be
after the Decease of my said Mother Elizabeth Shortland sell and dispose of the
same for the most money that can be got and by and out of the money arising by such Sale
Do and shall in the first place (in case my personal estate shall not be sufficient to pay
and discharge all my just debts Legacies and Funeral Expences) make up and
pay such Deficiency and the Surplus Money if any shall remain do and
shall equally pay unto and divide amongst my Brother and Sisters Thomas
Shortland Elizabeth the Wife of William Margets of Sherbourne in the County
of Gloucester wheelwright Mary Gilkes of Chippingnorton aforesaid Widow Sarah the
Wife of James Wain of Langford in the County of Oxford Wheelwright
Dorothy the wife of Thomas Insal of Chippingnorton aforesaid Innholder and
Ann the Wife of Harvey Wheeler of Banbury in the said County of Oxford
Peruke Maker and Hannah Shortland Also I give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Gilkes and unto
my kinswomen Elizabeth Gilkes Elizabeth Buckett Hannah Insal Anne
Insal and Mrs Sarah Timms of Overnorton in the County of Oxford Spinster
One guinea a piece to be paid them by my Executor hereinafter named within
Six months next after my decease All the rest residue and remainder of my
ready money Goods Chattels and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever
after payment of my just Debts Legacies and Funeral Expences I Give and
bequeath unto my said Nephew Thomas Gilkes In Trust that he the said
Thomas Gilkes his Executors or Administrators do and shall from time to
time place or Continue the same out at Interest and the Interest thereof do
and shall pay unto my said Mother Elizabeth Shortland or her Assigns
during the term of her natural life and from and immediately after her
decease then upon this further trust that the said Thomas Gilkes his
Executors or Administrators do and shall pay and divide All my said Goods
Chattels and personal estate unto and amongst my said Brother and Sisters
Thomas Shortland Elizabeth Margets Mary Gilkes Sarah Waine Dorothy
Insal and Ann Wheeler and Hannah Shortland And my Will is and I do hereby direct and order
that the said Thomas Gilkes his Executors or Administrators shall out of
my said personal estate be allowed all his reasonable Costs Charges and Expences
in executing the Trusts in him reposed And I do make and appoint the
said Thomas Gilkes (upon the Trusts aforesaid) Executor of this my will
hereby revoking and making void all former and other wills by me at any
time heretofore made In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand
and Seal the Twenty Fourth day of January in the Thirtieth year of the
reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain
France and Ireland King Defender of the faith and so forth and in the year of
our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Seven.
