  • I give my son Avery Whitfield my Messuage or Tenement, land etc in Stanford which I purchased of the late General? Cox, also my piece of freehold arable land of about 13 acres 1 rood in Stanford which I lately purchased of Thomas Hunter; To hold to him and his heirs etc forever. But Avery shall permit his brother William to occupy that part of the [property] as is now in his occupation, with half of the garden, for five years from my decease at the yearly rent of £3 10s.
  • I give my son Levi Whitfield my Messuage or Tenement wherein I now dwell with the buildings, backside, garden etc, also the two Closes or Grounds of meadow or pasture land in Stanford called Gallows Leaze and Farthing Leaze etc, also my Close adjoining the homestall called Pigeon House Close and the little piece of land adjoining, all which premises lie on the north-east side of the turnpike road leading from Wantage to Faringdon; To hold to him and his heirs etc forever, But subject to the payment of £400 to my son William Whitfield, because there is no farmhouse on the premises given below to him, and the £400 shall be paid within one year after my decease but without interest.
  • I give my son William Whitfield all my Closes or Grounds of meadow or pasture land in Stanford called Taylors Leaze, Pinnells Ground, Sheepcroft Hill, High Leaze and Ghoosey Close, and the enclosure adjoining Sheepcroft Hill called the Croft and Road Corner with their appurtenances, all which premises lie on the south-west side of the turnpike road; To hold to him and his heirs etc forever.
  • I give my son Avery four of my cart-horses, one wagon, one hay-cart with the harness and my ploughs, harrows and winnowing table.
  • I give my daughter Ann my best bed and bedstead with the furniture, sheets, blankets etc, my best tea-table, china and silver tankard, and half a dozen of my best silver teaspoons, also my tea-tray and silver tea tongs, my dressing table and glass, and all my silver table-spoons.
  • I give my son Lancelot my silver pint cup, and to my son Avery my silver half-pint cup.
  • I give my sons William and Levi all my dairy utensils equally divided between them, and my stock of bacon equally divided between them immediately after my decease.
  • I give my son Levi my best gun and my son William my second best gun and my scales or balance.
  • I give all the rest of my household goods, furniture, plate, linen and implements of household to my sons Avery and Levi equally.
  • I give my servant James Collins £10 if living with me as servant at the time of my death but not otherwise
  • All the residue of my freehold Messuages, Lands, Tenements etc and personal estate and effects not already bequeathed I give to my sons William and Levi and their heirs etc equally as tenants in common and not as joint tenants, subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses and the above legacies.

  • It is my particular desire that my coffin shall cost no more than a guinea and that I may be buried in a plain and decent manner and carried to church by six of my grandsons, to whom I give £1 apiece.

  • Whereas in my will I gave my son Robert Whitfield £500 to be paid within one year after my decease but without interest.
  • Now because I have since provided him with the equal of that amount I revoke the legacy of £500.
  • I confirm my will in all other particulars.

The last Will and Testament of Robert Whitfield of Stanford in the Vale in the County of Berks yeoman which I hereby make publish and declare in manner following – that is to say I give and bequeath unto my Son Lancelot Whitfield the sum of one hundred Pounds of lawful English Money unto my Son Robert Whitfield the sum of five hundred Pounds of like Money unto my Son Hungerford Whitfield the sum of one hundred Pounds of like Money unto my daughter Ann Whitfield the sum of one thousand Pounds of like money and unto my Granddaughters Sefalina? Belcher and Miriam Belcher the sum of one hundred Pounds each of like Money to be Paid to them respectively their respective Executors Administrators and Assigns within one year next after my decease but without interest for the same in the meantime Also I give and devise unto my Son Avery Whitfield all that my Messuage or Tenement Land Hereditaments Estate and premises situate lying and being in Stanford aforesaid which I purchased of the late General? Cox and also all that my plot or piece of freehold arable Land containing thirteen Acres and one Rood (be the same more or less) situate lying and being in Stanford aforesaid and which I lately purchased of Thomas Hunter To hold the same respectively unto and to the use of my said Son Avery his heirs and Assigns forever Nevertheless it is my will that he my said Son Avery shall permit his brother William to reside in and occupy that part of the said Messuage or Tenement as is now in his occupation and also one half part of the Garden thereto belonging for the term of five years from the time of my decease at the yearly rent of three Pounds and ten shillings Also I give and devise unto my Son Levi Whitfield all that my Messuage or Tenement wherein I now dwell with the Buildings Backside Garden and Appurtenances thereunto belonging and also all those two Closes or Grounds of Meadow or Pasture Land situate lying and being in Stanford aforesaid and called by the names of Gallows Leaze and ffarthing Leaze with their Appurtenances and also my Close adjoining the Homestall? called Pigiron House Close and little Corner or piece of Land adjoining thereto and all which Premises are situate lying and being on the North East side of the Turnpike Road leading from Wantage to ffaringdon To hold the same Messuage or Tenement Closes or Grounds and Premises with their Appurtenances unto and To the use of him my said Son Levi Whitfield his heirs and Assigns forever subject nonetheless to and I do hereby charge the same with the sum of four hundred Pounds of lawful English money which I hereby give and bequeath unto my said Son William Whitfield in consideration of there being no ffarm House on the Premises next hereinafter given and devised to him and I direct that the said sum of ffour hundred Pounds shall be paid him within one year next after my decease but without any Interest for the same in the meantime Also I give and devise unto my said Son William Whitfield all those my several Closes or Grounds of Meadow or Pasture Land situate lying and being in Stanford aforesaid and called by the several names of Taylors Leaze Pinnells Ground Sheepcroft Hill High Leaze and Ghoosey Close and the inclosure or lot of ground adjoining Sheepcroft Hill called the Croft and Road Corner with their & every of their Appurtenances all which Premises are situate on the south west side of the Turnpike Road leading from Wantage to ffaringdon To hold the same unto and To the use of him my said Son William Whitfield his Heirs and Assigns forever Also I give and bequeath unto my said Son Avery Whitfield four of my Cart Horses one Wagon one Hay Cart with the Harness and my Ploughs Harrows and Winnowing Table Also I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Ann my best bed and bedstead with the furniture Sheets Blankets and other things belonging to it my best Tea Table China and Silver Tankard and half a dozen of my best silver Teaspoons and also my Tea Tray and silver Tea Tongs my dressing Table and Glass and all my silver Table Spoons Also I give and bequeath unto my said Son Lancelot my silver Pint Cup and to my Son Avery my silver half Pint Cup Also I give and bequeath unto my said Sons William and Levi all my Dairy Utensils to be equally divided between them and it is my desire that my Stock of Bacon shall be equally divided between my said Sons William Avery and Levi immediately after my decease to whom I do hereby give the same I give to my son Levi my best gunn and to my son William my second best gun and my Scales or balance and I give and bequeath all the rest of my household Goods ffurniture Plate Linen and Implements of household unto my two Sons Avery and Levi equally to be divided between them Also I give to my servant James Collins the legacy or sum of ten Pounds of like lawful Money if living with me as Servant at the time of my death but not otherwise And as to all the rest and residue of my freehold Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments and Personal Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever of which I may die seized possessed of or entitled unto and not hereinbefore by me given devised or bequeathed I give devise and bequeath the same unto my said Sons William and Levi their Heirs Executors and Administrators respectively share and share alike as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants subject nevertheless to the Payment of my just Debts funeral and Testamentary expenses and the several Legacies hereinbefore by me given and bequeathed And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said Sons William and Levi joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby revoke and make void all former Wills and or Testaments by me at any time heretofore made and lastly it is my Particular wish and desire that my Coffin shall cost no more than a Guinea and that I may be buried in a plain and decent manner and carried to Church by six of my Grandsons to whom I give one Pound a piece In Witness whereof I the said Robert Whitfield the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament contained in three sheets of Paper to the first two sheets thereof set my hand and to this the third and last sheet thereof set my hand and seal this tenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fourteen Robert Whitfield

This is a Codicil to be annexed to and taken as part of the last Will and Testament of me Robert Whitfield of Stanford in the Vale in the County of Berks Yeoman bearing date the tenth day of March one thousand eight hundred and fourteen Whereas I did in and by my said Will give and bequeath unto my Son Robert Whitfield the Legacy or sum of ffive hundred Pounds of lawful English Money to be paid to him his Executors Administrators or Assigns within one year next after my decease but without interest in the meantime Now in consideration of my having since the making of my said Will otherwise provided for him my said Son equal to the aforesaid Legacy I do therefore hereby revoke the said Legacy of ffive hundred Pounds so as aforesaid given to my said Son Robert and I do hereby ratify and confirm my said Will in all the other Particulars thereof In Witness whereof I the said Robert Whitfield the Testator have to this Codicil set my hand and Seal this twenty eighth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fifteen The mark of Robert Whitfield
