I Leonard Yate the elder . . . clothier, being whole of mind . . .
  • I commend my soul unto almighty god my maker and redeemer and my body to be buried according to the decent order of the Christianity.
  • I give to our mother church in Oxford 4d.
  • I give to the vicar of Witney in remembrance of my tithes 6/8.
  • I give to the poor inhabitants of the Town of Witney 20 marks in money which 20 marks are? in the hands of Thomas Tayler my son in law and shall be paid yearly by him after 13/4 the year by twenty years after my decease at Christmas and Easter by even portions.
  • I give to Jone my wife the indenture? of Lease for term of years that I have yet to run in the fulling mill within the Tything of Curbridge called Walles? mill.
  • I give to the said Jone all my plate and household stuff, willing that certain necessary things hereafter remembered, placed in my manor house and in the rooms thereof, shall always remain in the same as standards? like as it is particularly expressed hereafter in my will that unto? wit? all manner of sylings? and glass and presses in the sylings? and benches.

  • I give to every one of the children of Thomas Tayler of Witney, tanner, fifteen shillings being eight pound which I have delivered to the same Thomas for them. [Note that £8 is not evenly divisible by 15/-]

  • All the residue of my goods and chattels I give to Leonard Yate my younger son whom I make my executor.

In the name of god amen The xix'th daye of June the yere of our
Lord god 1553 and in the seventh yere of the reigne of our soferaign
lorde Edwarde the? vi'th? by the grace of god kynge of England France
and Irelande defender of the faith and of the churche of Englande and
allso of Irelande in earth? the supreame heed I Leonard Yate thelder
of Wytney in the Countie of Oxon clothyer beyng hole of minde prayse
be unto allmyghtie god make this my Testamente and last wyll
that is to wrytte?, Firste I commende my soule unto allmyghtie god
my maker and redeemer and my bodye to be buryed accordyng to
